To a certain extent yes (AFC and NFC East are stupid) but they're still largely geographically based. The difference is the budget for travel that would be required. For Northwestern to take a bus to Bloomington to play Indiana is one thing; to have them traveling for a schedule that's something like Arizona State, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, Miami, Memphis, and Colorado every year? Just couldn't happen outside of the big schools.Geographic divisions, in all sports, are from the era of train travel. I would say it still affects college sports the most since kids are "supposed" to be in class unless they are in a game on the weekend, but I was just having this conversation about pro sports and how stupid NFL divisions are.
