Directing: Best 3 in a Row?

followed by The Man Who Wasn’t There, which people sleep on. It’s great.
If I was going to play devils advocate, I’d say O Brother isn’t as good as people make it to be.
I can agree on O Brother.

Still….coming off Fargo and the Big Lebowski it’s enough for me to line our a solid three movie run.

Ah fuck. I thought he only wrote for Death Proof. Not a completely horrid to me….but it breaks up the three. Plus Grindhouse is in there too.

I could go Basterds, Django and OUATIH as the three, but it won’t be right. Hateful 8 is in there, and that movie sucked!

I think you have the best Tarantino three movie run in your post.
OUATIH is massively overrated imo. I didn’t h seedy and the point. Seemed like one of those passion projects that’s never really compelling.

I’ve got a different view on it. It wasn’t earth shattering, but it was very good IMO. Good enough to make a best three in a row if Hateful 8 weren’t in there…..because I like it better than Jackie Brown. It’s the less weaker link of three in a rows.

Again, if that Hateful 8 abortion didn’t exist.

Same with Spielberg. I tried to go through and find a perfect three in a row, I just couldn’t.

If you could go back and make 1941 never happen than you would have Jaws, Close Encounters and Indiana Jones.

I loved 1941 as a kid, laughed my ass off. But, it can’t go in such a list.

Making it a three movie run makes this hard.

Kind of the same for Kubrick, though Dr Strangelove, 2001 and Clockwork Orange is a pretty solid three to me.

1941 was great!

I agree about Spielberg. Can’t get 3 in a row. Another guy like that is Tony Scott. Check out the list of his movies. He has some mega commercial hits that were very entertaining but tough to get three in a row.

we’ve talked about some really great directors who have had a number of great films but hard to get 3 in a row. With that in mind, check out this streak of consecutive films by James Cameron.

The Terminator (1984)
Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
Aliens (1986)
The Abyss (1989)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Point Break (1991)
Last Action Hero (1993)
True Lies (1994)

While all of these are not “great” they are all solid IMO and I’d match the first 3 against any list here. Also, this list doesn’t even include his two biggest movies (Titanic and Avatar).

Here’s a sleeper:

Predator
Die Hard
The Hunt for Red October

Director: John McTiernan

Good one!!

Last Boy Scout
True Romance
Crimson Tide

That’s about the best three I could muster, though the one-two of Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop was just begging for a third.

I’ll take a stab at this…..Ridley Scott

Gladiator
Hannibal
Black Hawk Down

Hannibal is certainly the weak link, and likely the disqualifier for some, but that’s about his best run of three.

I was just about to look Cameron up. That’s a fucking run. The first three is probably the best three film run….but the totality of all is solid.

That’s a great trio!

Point Break was his ex, Katherine Bigelow.

Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, There’s Something About Mary is a good three movie stretch. And their first three.

I liked Kingpin. Not so much the others.

Sorry. Rambo 2, while beloved by me, can’t be on any such list.

John Hughes:

Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
Weird Science
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Planes, Trains, & Automobiles

Yeah, but which three? I struggle as I grew up on all of these. Loved Weird Science, but feel it’s odd ball in this list. And it kind of breaks up the trifecta thing.

Nah. Weird Science is the best on the list actually.
If I had to choose: Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris.
