Stop and think what you just said Oregon had to do:Yes and no. I think it can be done, but a program has to stick with the same program which can be hard to do.
For example, Oregon recently had the longest run of sustained success in their history. Ducks fans can probably give more accurate detail on when it started, but they didn't just get a bunch of new uniforms and suddenly start winning games.
They did it by building on 3* kids that they developed. Then they started snapping some of the 4* kids from out of California since USC couldn't sign all of them.
Then, when Chip Kelly came in with his offense and USC got hit with the sanctions...they started pulling in a few more 4* and a 5* here and there and got themselves into the NC hunt. They hit a bit of a downturn when Helfrich couldn't sustain what Chip was doing. But they seem to have begun to right themselves again.
So they show it can be done, but it takes the patience to make a plan and stick with it. Sometimes through multiple coaches.
- Started developing 3* kids.
- Was able to get some Cali kids because USC couldn't sign them all.
- A generational coach came in running a scheme no one had done before, and which has now been gutted by substitution rules.
- Their main competitor got hit with sanctions so they could now pull 4* and 5* that competitor used to get.
- I'll add - and now they have a Saban tree coach running the show who knows how to $recruit$.
That's not exactly a process that can be duplicated.
