You guys want to hear another cool story? Girl behind the counter at the med marijuana place asks me what my knuckle tats say. I show her and explain that I had a heart transplant. She’s asking me all kinds of questions. I explain how the med marijuana does wonders combating all the side effects from the anti-rejection drugs. Finally she sends me back but makes me promise to stop and finish talking to her on my way out.

On my way out she is crying. She apologizes. She tells me a guy she dated died from a heart transplant. Not because of the transplant but because he just stopped taking his pills. He was a gym guy. Hated that he got sick and just gave up. Died.

So we’re friends now.

I LOVE that story! Not the part about her friend that died. But all the rest of it!

I was born w a bad heart and had open heart surgery at 1. Lived a normal life until 31. Transplant at 34. So I had my whole life to prepare for it.

A guy like her bf, a gym guy, gets sick, it can be devastating. When I had my transplant I was in there w 2 other guys around my age. One guy was getting his 2nd transplant 8 years after his first one. Former Army Ranger. Was no problem for him. Crushed it. This other guy gave up from the get. Laid in bed high on pain killers all day every day as me and this other guy were in rehab 3 times a day, doing laps around the floor etc.

Turmoil brings out the best in some and flattens others. No saying how someone is going to deal w it.
