Would have to take some pages out of the current/future Big12 survival playbook imo. Try to use the best brands ya have , hopefully market regional rivalry games correctly, count on basketball to pitch in as much as it can too and start expanding outside the US for potential new bases to attract.
East
Florida State
Miami
Clemson
UNC
Duke
VT
WVU
GT
Rivalry football game in FL with Miami/FSU, both good/marketable blue blood type brands.
Biggest CBB rivalry in UNC/Duke, be nice if Duke would invest in their football program more, they seem to make at least solid hires at HC but they are lacking overall.
Atlanta GA market with GT (I held my nose and took them over Syracuse for the southeastern region football potential) , UGA has shown that if GT ever gets its act together, that would be huge for recruiting (could be really good at basketball too). Potential Sleeping giant type of program but GT’s brass MUST get their heads out of their arses when it comes to sports programs and the conference has to know how to cater to their needs as far as marketing them. GT COULD be a REALLY good conference member imo.
VT/WVU gives ya the passionate hate rivalry game regardless of sport that everyone likes and that one (football) is usually a good watch/game regardless of records because of the atmosphere those fan bases create. WVU is imo underrated as a basketball program, solid brand in that department. VT needs to be a bit better but has been… ok , of late, if they could get as good as UVA has been lately in hoops that’s a potentially strong combo for the conference. Pitt might work as well for either spot but they don’t have the fan passion/numbers that those two do so I’m rolling with the Hokies and Mountaineers in my conference.
West
Oregon
Washington
Baylor
TCU
Oklahoma State
Kansas State
Arizona
Kansas
Good brands and rival game(s) in Oregon/Washington.
TCU/BU gives ya a good rival game(s) in the state of TX which could pay dividends similar to having one in FL imo.
Part of me would love to have ASU over KState but KState is ran better and too many schools in that time zone is a no no, bad enough in the mid west.
I like the Utah/BYU rival too but… gotta make cuts somewhere.
This was a lot tougher than on the surface and TBH I’m still not sure it’s EXACTLY what I would want.
