Evidently we won our appeal on the targeting call, if it makes you feel any better.
The Reese one?

That's what I'm reading, he'll be eligible for the first half of PSU now, at least. The Reese one?
There's far too much subjectivity, which is just pathetic considering how long it's been around now. Intent really has to be the entire crux of the penalty. Reese's play Saturday was a textbook hit when trying to break up a pass, which is did successfully. Hell the WR wasn't even phased by the hit. In such a crucial time in the game, it's unreal these officials can just take over the way they do, but this is hardly the first time this rule has fucked us over. The targeting call in the Sparty Michigan game was just as bad, it wasn't even "bad enough" for the refs to flag it on the field but of course the replay nerds got a boner to be able to buzz in and get a kid ejected.
They need to change the rule big time. "Targeting" should only apply to clearly malicious intent hits (like launching and using the helmet as a weapon pretty much) not bang bang plays where half the time the "targeting" is caused by the offensive player falling or lowering their head at the last second when the defender is already engaged.

So they spent like 10 minutes on the review and determined it was targeting only for someone else to look at it and say it wasn't?
It's shit like this that makes nebraska fans feel like the refs are out for em. On that ball spot the refs said he was a FULL yard short even though he is clearly a FULL yard passed the line to gain.
Completely fucking ridiculous
Serious question...how would you suggest imposing accountability? Suspensions? Points system leading to suspension? Not allowed to work post season games? They should be held accountable for egregious calls/missed calls in either direction.
Refs have the ability to determine the outcome of a football game more than anyone else.
Whether that be win/loss, point spreads, or over/unders.
The tweet claiming this is not exactly a good source. I'm guessing it's not true.

One of the drawbacks is they are not full-time officials. Heck I think even the NFL guys are doing this as a side gig?

Could conferences pay their refs more? Gonna be tough for FCS and most G5 schools to afford to pay enough money to all the refs they need in order to prevent them from having second jobs, but the P4 certainly could. Even if they still have side jobs, their main income needs to be from being a referee. That way when you suck or let your bias show there is a very severe penalty for it.Yes. They're supposedly side gigs and they're paid on a per game basis.
iirc typically made up of prominent people. Lawyers, etc..

True. I googled it and according to a fast search refs make $2k-$3k per game. Not chump change but no one is working for 24-36k a year. I say take some of the conferences TV money and invest it in itself. Head official makes $10k per game. The rest make $7k per game. At that rate most of them aren't going to hold a 9-5 outside of the league, so they will be more dedicated to knowing the rules and incentivized to get the calls right. Getting a suspension or losing out on bowl games or playoff games would be enough to pull their heads out of their asses. Zero accountability right now, a suspension or missing a bowl game just means more free time.P4 definitely should pay refs enough where it can definitely stand as what a full time job would. I think it would improve things but you're definitely never going to completely eliminate garbage officiating.
