Here is my theory...
He died because he is 95 and thats what happens. She couldn't bare to face life without him so she took the pills that were found by her and committed suicide

ah I am glad you asked...
A few possibilities if you will indulge me

1) the dog got to some of the pills and died accidentally
2) this was her favorite dog and she wanted it to die with them
3) the dog killed them both. The other dog avenged their deaths and justice was cruelly handed out

The pills being strewn all over the house gives credence to this theory.

Gene took the dogs for a walk. The dogs are super excited to return home. and trip Gene in the mud room on the way in, forcing him to fall.

Wife freaks out yelling at the dogs, spills pills everywhere and has a heart attack. Both die.

Dog dies either by starvation or maybe it ate some pills too (doubtful) or maybe it just dies of natural causes.

But the pills being all over the place means something happened.

That particular dog was in a crate. Captive.

There were other dogs in the house that were still alive...probably drinking water out of the toilet.
