Greatest Solo Artist of All Time

No one has posted this kid from Gary, IN yet I don't think, he's a bit controversial but he did sell quite a few records and probably deserves a mention in a thread like this even if he's not your cup of tea

MJ isn't my cup of tea, but neither are almost all the rest of the artists mentioned here.

The reason I think MJ doesn't qualify in a discussion like this is because he was primarily a vocalist and entertainer. He didn't compose the music himself and he didn't play any instruments. If MJ is in the discussion, then so should be artists like Madonna and Eminem and that just feels wrong.

Hank Jr. did the same thing except he was live on stage. Double Eagle tour has some of the best video.
Hank Jr’s talent is wildly underrated. Can play pretty well any instrument at a high level. His dad had a bigger impact for sure, but I don’t think there’s any debate that Jr is more talented. Hank 3 too. Been pretty underwhelmed by what I’ve heard out of Hank IV so far

Sr's impact was magnified because of his death. Nashville brass made a killing off a dead man that they wouldn't go out of their way to piss on when he was alive. Doesn't change the fact that as a songwriter and performer, he was a GOAT.

I've never understood the love for Madonna. I can understand the reasoning behind "disqualifying" both her and MJ from a list like this but I understood how/why MJ topped so many charts and sold as many records as he did. Madonna's popularity I never got (and yes some of this is probably related to me being a male but I've actually heard my sister express a similar opinion about her).

Hank Jr got famous because of his name. Hank Sr is a country music icon.

I listen to Sr more than I do Jr, but him dying young and cashing in helped shape the future of American music as a whole.

I'm with you... Always disliked Madonna's stuff. My wife always liked her stuff, though. Music taste is very personal; which is why I find it ridiculous that people criticize other people's preferences. It's like someone who likes blue criticizing someone else for liking the color green; it's utterly self-righteous and asinine.

I agree.

Right, it's not that I'm surprised that some people liked Madonna's music, more that I'm surprised that so so many people did. Kinda like how if someone told me they were going to an Insane Clown Posse concert that was sold out I wouldn't be surprised but if they then told me that the concert was at the LA Coliseum I'd be a bit shocked.

Yup. We could rattle off a lot of bands and entertainers with questionable content that have experienced enormous success & popularity...

People like what they like... :noidea:

Too bad some folks just come here just to criticize other people's favorite musical artists.

Sex sells and rebellion is cool with youngsters. Madonna hit both during the time of the Moral Majority at the pushing the edges but wasn't as over the top as she is now.

Madonna is a great self promoter. I guess she needs to be controversial to be sucessful.

Exactly. Early on she figured how to market her sexuality and vocals in a manner that stirred just enough controversy to expand her market. Once the shock played out, her vocals were not enough to sustain her so her controversial acts had to get crazier. Her real talent wasn't singing, it was marketing.
