I believe that it will still be under CA tax since he accrued the payments in CA. I am FAAAAAAAAR from a tax attorney, but I believe that to be true.

Only base compensation is taxable as the laws are written currently, the money that isn't being accrued in these years but is contracted to be paid at a later date will be taxed under the laws of the state he lives when it is actually paid. States can't collect taxes on future earnings that might be earned while residing in another state.

It's bad enough that CA is trying to pass a law to stop teams doing this:
