The first thing is Auburn has a Kicker commit that is the #1 kicker in the country but he is only listed as a 3 star. Don't really care about the star rating as he is supposed to be a great one but if you are the best in the country at your position shouldn't that be a 5 star?

I've noticed this with offensive linemen quite a bit also in that they tend to get fewer stars than more splashy positions like QB, RB, DT, CB etc. There are some 5 stars out there but very few and I'd say the majority are 3 stars.

So what criteria has to be met to get the 5th star? I mean it goes without saying you are can't miss prospect but if you are the number 1 FG kicker in the country and hit a 61 yarder during a game this year shouldn't you at least be 4 stars?

Just curious.

There’s usually only a little over 30 5 stars in every class. Kickers rarely have any stars at all

I get that and like I said I'm not obsessing over it but I would think there would be some type of criteria that is applied and it would be for every position.

I don't think that is actually happening and it's way too subjective for my taste. Take offensive lineman the standard is pretty much 3 stars for the majority of them and the ones that do get 4 stars its typically based on size alone. I'm sure there are some 5-star linemen out there but Auburn hasn't ever gotten one.

If they are going to give every position stars then it would make sense that each position would be independently ranked and stars awarded based solely on historical trends of that position.

Just my observation.

just cause a kicker is #1 in the nation doesn't make him a 5 star.. he's just the best out of a shitty class

There was a year where the #1 Center was a very low 4 star

Another thing is a lot of the 3 stars that go to teams like Bama, OSU and UGA were no stars until they got an offer from a major program. That Jacob’s RB for Bama was that way, same with Ladd McConkey for UGA

This. The top 30 kids are 5 star. If a kicker were a top 30 player in the country then either the class is insanely weak or the kicker also is a stud QB.

I can accept that but has there ever been a 5 star kicker?

This is my point.

I think all of it is too subjective and there needs to be some criteria.

On3 is the newest recruting company.. and you should follow their new rankings.. they are pretty solid and they explain the criteria and how it applys to so and so.
247 composite was the best, but this On3 company looks to have better evaluators and aren't caught up in the camp circuits politics the way 247 (Nike/UA) and Rivals (adidas) are

Star ratings are based on their potential, not only how they compare to their peers.

5-star usually means they are projected to make it to the NFL.

That’s why you can have a bunch of ”decent” 3-star players that are projected to be D1 starters in college, but probably won’t make it to the NFL.

5 star is meaning FIRST RD NFL talent

or if you are a regard you can use the 6 star Rivals rating

I think the highest they've ever rated a kicker is a 3. A lot of it doesn't make sense. Classes with pure numbers are often ranked higher than classes with smaller numbers but a higher ranking of player. The system values oversigned classes being that it averages out your top 20 best recruits (or something like that). Seems like top 100 players should be valued more than they are as well.

I mean, it's a kicker.

Seems like a 3 star kicker is a 5 star at a real position.

Am I a regard?

If the kid was committed to Ohio State or Alabama instead of Auburn he immediately becomes a five star.

There is a service out there rating kickers and punters exclusively, they are obviously handing out 5 stars...apparently like candy, because it seems like all I ever see there.
