Mike Elko's Texas A&M Contract Includes Fat Performance Bonuses

Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko has big incentives in his contract. What are the bonuses he can earn? What is his salary?

Elko agreed to a six-year deal with the Aggies that will pay him a base salary of $7 million. However, there’s plenty more money waiting for him if he can have success in the postseason – something Texas A&M hasn’t done.

His incentives are as follows:
  • $1 million for making the CFP.
  • $1.5 million for advancing to the CFP quarterfinals or winning the SEC title.
  • $2 million for advancing to the CFP semifinals.
  • $2.5 million for advancing to the CFP title game.
  • $3.5 million for winning a national title.

Smart would be making your base like 4 million and building up from there. At 7mm base over 6 years guaranteed that's 42mm in the bank no matter what he does.

IMO this is just aTm flexing like they did when they had the fake national championship trophy made when they hired Jimbo. I won't be surprised if Elko has a good year and they give him a raise to 9mm and an extension up to 10 years and then are in the same boat again. ADs need to learn there is a point the guys are not going to jump ship and if they do you can replace them.

How is putting incentives in there "flexing"? He already has a clause to add a year for certain other milestones met.

Because with incentives it's the biggest contract in college football by about 4mm (I think because Saban is at 13) and look at the scale it is weird and kinda dumb. With the expanded playoff if you win the SEC you will be in the playoff so with their chart that is 3.5mm because it hits two milestones.

Where is the milestone for being ranked in the top 10 recruiting and one for a high graduation percentage? The incentives just don't seem well thought out.
 
So you're saying A&M is safe from having to pay him $17.5 million?

There are no bragging rights for high grad or top 10 recruiting, there are for making the playoffs and winning it all. The incentives are spot on, you are looking really stupid here. Incentive based contracts are the best way to go.
 
lol he doesn't collect every single incentive.. if he wins the CFP he doesn't get the appearance, win incentive along with it..

They learned their lesson

EXACTLY and that's why it's a flex.

I agree that incentive-based contracts are the best way but when the base is 7mm (which is the top 5% of CFB) shouldn't you have started lower and built up building more types of incentives? It almost seems like they trying to convince you that it's an incentive-heavy contract when the fact is Elko will be one of the highest-paid coaches in CFB if he has a losing record and you didn't hire Nick Saban.

I like the idea of what they did but the structure is off. They went for a flex to pump up the fan base which is about as easy to do aTm as getting progressives to protest these days.

Set the base low at 4mm (which in CFB terms is still top 10%) and then add multiple incentives like 1 million for 10 win season, 500k for a bowl but no they paid a big base and made all the incentives for huge events.

It’s a flex.

National Championships are worth every penny. Auburn’s applications went up 15% when they won the national championship and they never went back down.

It’s the cheapest recruiting marketing program you could find. Even if your enrollment is full it will increase the quality of applicants.
