Detachment

7.9

Great cast. The one fatal flaw of the movie is that if anything it's a bit over the top with being over dramatic. Something tells me with certain scenes this movie would not be allowed to be made today. I like my some dark somber movies though.

Found a hidden gem on Amazon. Welcome to Collinwood from the early 2000's

Justice League Snyder Cut

6.0

I really like Batman movies. Didn't see Batman vs Superman since it looked terrible and I heard it was terrible. Same for the original Justice League. Not entirely sure why I decided to watch this 4 hour recut of it. Don't like the Marvel movies and this just seemed like it wanted to be those shitty Marvel movies. Too much CGI and loud lines. Hate the casting I don't honk Ben Affleck works at all as Batman, just way too bulky looking. Audio special effects so loud it's hard to hear the dialog. So much of it was so generic and boring. In 4:3 resolution for some "creative" reason. Not enough focus in Batman and Superman who are the only interesting characters in the whole thing.

Just wasn't good, wasn't fun.

Never been into the Marvel shit, tho I've ended up seeing most of them over the years. But I never really cared and I never really knew they were connected and that there was a timeline order until recently watching WandaVision on Disney plus er whatever it's called? Anyway, started watching em' in order, and if nothing else, it makes them a little more interesting, as it's apparently one big story?:noidea: Who knew? LOL

See I also gave it a 6. It is better than the original that was released, but I didn't think it felt like it was trying to be like Marvel, I thought that about the first one, especially given that Whedon was the director that released the first one (he directed Avengers). I felt that this was trying to be an epic with Superheroes. With its slow-motion, dramatic pauses, dramatic music, etc... Marvel is mostly light even in its serious moments, this is much heavier and darker and it should be.

I liked the style, but I think there was too much going on in this movie, it needed to be simplified.

I watch the Snyder Cut last night.

the original cut must have been REALLY bad, because I don’t even know how to compare the two since I honestly don’t remember anything about the original. I was watching this as if it were completely new.

I don’t really understand the point of the 4:3. My only guess is that since they were working with pre-shot film, they may have needed the cropping in enough scenes that it made sense. Either way, I didn’t even notice it until about 3 hours in (even though I did make note of the disclaimer at the start).

I was entertained. It wasn’t great, though. There are still some MAJOR structural flaws to movie, like they are going too fast. They need to introduce everyone in their own movies so when they all appear on film together, there is an emotional awe added to it. Also it frees up time in this movie to deal with Steppenwolf and Darkseed. They are prepping Darkseed to be their Thanos, so that is good, but they still glossed over Steppenwolf because they had to deal with Barry’s side story with his dad, Viktor’s back story with his family and Arthur’s arguments with his family. Those all need their own movies to deal with.

Anyway, I never felt bored and only checked the time because my dog was nagging me for dinner. Never because I felt the movie was dragging. That is a good sign for a 4 hour movie.

I want to give it a 7 or so, but the structural, DC issues are too big to ignore. I gotta give it a 6.5/10

Alright, watched a lot of movies this weekend but going through some shit so it helps with distracting.

Our Idiot Brother

7.5

Always thought this movie looked so damn stupid and it was but it was an entertaining stupid. Fits my criteria of the baseline 7.5 that doesn't feel like time wasted watching it.

Control

8.0

Movie about the lead singer of Joy Division who killed himself. I know of one song by them but the movie was quite good. Got me to download their two albums. It's interesting because some indie bands I was a big fan of from the late 00s were clearly influenced by Joy Division but I had no idea until really listening to them as a result of this movie. A weird thi G though is they never seemed to be that big of a and at any point in the movie. Not sure if they weren't at their peak and they were just popular after the lead singer killed himself or what but good movie.

Beastie Boys Story

8.4

Documentary/live presentation recording directed by Spike Jonze of the two surviving Beastie Boy members during a run of shows detailing their history/run. I remember when this show came to Philly, did not go to it but probably should have. Really good look into their rise. A bit of an awkward stage precense in their presentation. My one complaint is that it really went in depth into their rise and everything but it feels like they had a hard stop at 2 hours so once it got to the drop of Ill Communication I think it briefly mebtioned Hello Nasty and then just immediately skipped everything else and jumped right to their last concert at Bonnaroo in 09 (I was there!) and then the flowing death of MCA due to cancer. Really felt like there should have been another hour at least to this but they had a hard cut of 2 hours for the documentary. Really what holds it back from being the 9+ score it was on its way to being.

Sideways

8.1

Resubscribed to Hulu for this among other movies and this shit wasn't even in HD. Try watching a non HD movie on a top of the line 4k movie, it's difficult to adjust to. That said good movie. Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church were both very good in it.

Silver Linings Playbook

8.8

I've out this movie off for years. Eagles ties and all I always thought it was just some cheesy bs rom com but it was actually really really good. Jennifer Lawrence was an absolute smoke show in this. Not a huge Bradley Cooper fan but I thought this was his best performance that I've seen. My only issue is that the parlay bet and last half hour get a bit much but still very excellent film that I cannot believe I put off for this long.

I haven't taken the time to ACTUALLY think about all movies, but I typically think of this one inside my top 25. It's really good.

Haven't caught that one, did catch Ricky Powell: The Individualist on some free film festival that was streaming last year with the covid. Can't seem to find it streaming when I went to look it up now, but it was a good watch. For reference to why I brought it up for this post, this is the IMDB description:

Ricky Powell boasts a quintessential New York story, rising to fame as a street photographer in the 80's and 90's and touring with the Beastie Boys, capturing some of the wildest moments in popular culture.

Very cool. Will check out, thanks.:yo:

If Jason Bourne was black, would you own the boxset on blu-ray?
If Jason Bourne was black and getting hunted by (mostly) a bunch of white dudes, we'd hear how the movies were racist....

inb4 they remake the Bourne movies with Michael B. Jordan!

Would still be better than the one they made with Jeremy Renner.

I liked the book more. One of the very rare occasions that I've read a book and then even rarer that I've read a book before a movie adaptation. First was the Harry Potter series. Really good movies but the books were way better. Same thing with The Martian, good movie but I though the book was far better .
