Michigan’s Sherone Moore to be named head coach

With Harbaugh taking so many key pieces from his staff and so many players moving on, the Moore hiring is making even less sense. Unless they had no idea Harbaugh was gonna raid the fridge on his way out, I'm surprised they didn't at least consider a national search for an already established HC.

When Urban Meyer left Ohio State, he was careful not to poach any important coaches on his way to the NFL.

Harbaugh has taken Minter (DC) and Ben Herbert (Str/Cond) with him to San Diego. What an asshat.

Yeah, no downplaying how much those sting.

First year might be a little rough(9-3/8-4 given schedule), but this is kind of similar to what ND did with Freeman(Moore is more accomplished), but a lot of kids wanted an in-house hire, same with this situation, so not doing that would have caused a lot more craziness and upheaval IMO. Moore just needs to surround himself with a good DC and OC. Which I'm sure he will.

I'm on record saying this was a good hire. Only time will tell. Jedd Fisch may have made some sense, but he was already off to UW. I'm not sure who they could have gotten this late in the calendar.

I'd say 9-3. Expect to lose to OSU, they lose half of the Texas/Oregon/USC/Wash games. I could see us winning 3 of those if the QB/OL play is good enough.

I'd be very happy if we can find a way to win 10 games. But it's nice to not have to worry about meeting high expectations for a change.

Yeah, I'd lean 9-3 too. I'd say probable losses to OSU, Texas, and Oregon. Think Michigan could beat USC and Washington. I don't think anyone else has much of a chance to beat Michigan outside of those 5.

The idea of the kids wanting an in-house hire doesn't resonate much when they're losing so many kids. I think it would've been much more important to focus on an established name who can also bring in some of his own staff rather than piecing together staff with a HC with minimal coaching experience.

I also wouldn't say Moore is more accomplished than Freeman; they're the same age but Freeman was at least a coordinator for 4 years before being promoted to HC. 4 years ago, Moore was a TE coach. You're definitely right about his coordinators, he's going to need to hit on both or it could get really rough really soon.

That's how I feel. I'd worry more about USC if Lincoln Riley ever figures out the defensive side of the ball exists. If Michigan can figure things out at OL/QB I'll say they steal one from Oregon/Texas.

Sure they're losing a lot, but it could have been a lot more. I also don't think, this late in the calendar, that there are that many options.

Moore's had a lot more success as an assistant/OC than Freeman has as an assistant/DC. For an OC/OL coach he's extremely accomplished already.

Which coach is even a realistic option?

Losing the strength and conditioning coach really hurts. He was HUGE in the success of our program. He completely overhauled the S&C for the program. Recruits would come out of visits and one of the first things they comment on is our S&C program.

Who they replace him with will determine a lot.

Losing Minter sucks too, but I knew he was going if he wasn't hired as HC, as he is a NFL guy.

Will be interesting to see who we replace these guys with. Hope UM gave Moore a blank check to hire his staff.

Sherrone Moore is our best recruiter. He coached our OL 3 years and twice it won top OL in the country. He was also was named the top assistant in the country one year.

I love they hired him. I hate the two huge pieces we lost. The S&C coach and DC.

I mean, Bama had no problem immediately grabbing Kalen DeBoer.

I feel like this is something michigan fans would've said didn't count because he was using someone else's OL recruits. We heard you guys talk about how big a step back the OL took this year.

He could end up being a great coach, we'll see, but it's just extremely risky. He's never had to assemble a staff at all in his career, and that's an enormous factor in how successful your team is. Is he promoting from within for his coordinators?

Moore was the top recruiter on the staff. And the OL didn't take a big step back -- it just wasn't as good as the prior two years (Which won the top OL in the country). We still had 3 1st team All-B1G Offensive Lineman and Zak Zinter was 1st team All-American.

As far as who he puts together for his staff -- I have no clue. Hopefully Clinksdale is one -- he is another great recruiter. Him and Moore were our top two recruiters.

As far as being risky -- it is what it is. Day had zero HC experience, so was it risky for OAM to hire him? I like the hire. Moore played in the P5 level at Oklahoma, so he knows what it takes. If there is one area Michigan has to continue to be great, it is the OL and Moore knows that position.

Honestly though -- Michigan won a national title when many of the realistic fans never thought we'd see it again with the current landscape of CFB. Michigan can struggle for a decade and it won't change and the smile still won't leave my face, unless OAM gets another. Then we have to get another one.

Sure, but had a 2 week head start, which isn't insignificant.
We're talking 2 weeks, not 2 months, and he was announced almost immediately. Maybe Moore will work but I think they were thinking very short term with this move and not long term.

I don't even think we'll see much of an impact on this for a while I think you'll see a lot of the openings be filled with people already affiliated with the program. Our S&C coach leaves this morning, and is instantly filled with the guy working behind him for the last 3 years. I think offensive staff will just shift up. We might go out and get a DC, but wouldn't be shocked if they simply gave the job to Clinkscale -- who was Co-DC and secondary coach with Minter. So I think Harbaugh left a situation where he's only going to have to replace some low-level positions when this is all said and done.

Every Michigan fan already knew who the next coach was going to be if Harbaugh left. They weren't going anywhere else.

Moore is a great recruiter, he played OL at the P5 level (at Oklahoma, i believe) and really knows the OL position, which is huge for Michigan. He is a huge reason for Michigan's success the last 3 years (the other two huge reasons are now with the Chargers, Minter and Ben Hebert) Losing our S&C coach SUCKS. He completely changed our S&C program. Hopefully he had someone who was learning under him who continues with the program he installed.
