MLB may have a deal in place.......

I just can’t understand how anyone could take Manfred and the owners’ side on this

The Players' Union is the strongest in all pro sports. The owners' culpability ends with not addressing the conditions in trying for a new CBA before the end of last season. The players have only ever wanted more mega-contracts, more guaranteed income, more roster spots and don't give a shit that there's little way to get there, given the already high ticket prices and lack of continuing interest from local cable networks to carry games.

Consider that owners have been forced to pay out the same massive salaries during the 2+ years of the pandemic, and yet have been able to fill only about 30% of seats. They are the evil bigger assholes??

Since you asked it as “…..the evil bigger assholes…..”…

The owners locked the players out, and then made no attempt to negotiate for a month and a half.

You think the ownership group in Pittsburgh that's just pocketing revenue sharing money and not trying to pay good players gives a fuck about the fan base?
The terms "lockout" and "strike" don't mean much in the context of pro sports work stoppages. Neither side does anything until the 12th or 13th hour, because leverage works best when the paying fans are the ones being screwed over. Rarely is there an apology for delays or cancellation to the season, and never, ever from the players. The Players' Union skewed the economics of baseball so far, that we're to believe that a guy who's chronically injured should get guaranteed money for a multi-year contract that takes away multiple roster spots from guys that could actually play. And the union's response is that owners should pony up more funds for those guys too. Bullshit.

And Pittsburgh isn't representative of the MLB. It's never cared about putting a quality product on the field; at least, not for the last 25 years. You're watching Triple-A ball, if you're a fan of that team, and any player good enough to play in the Majors is rapidly moved out of town.

Lulz.

Let's just ignore the fact that multiple ownership groups aren't even trying, and are just lining their pockets. It's the players who are greedy.

I think it was in 2004 that like 20 players across the league were making more than the entire Marlins payroll

Orioles and Pirates fans can go fuck themselves for being stupid enough to support those teams then. How can they be competitive if guys like Manny Machado and Bryce Harper get $30 mil/yr, the money's guaranteed and the impetus always to spend more? How long can guys like Juan Soto or Vlad Guerrero Jr. be priced at a "bargain" before their agents demand more, and they're shipped out of town?

The last few offseasons saw multiple talented veterans remain unsigned, and the response from the union was that owners were being greedy for not signing them. It's a busted economy, and player agents and unions have driven the collapse.

A select few players get really rich. Ownership has exclusive rights to a player for close to a decade between the minors and the six years of arbitration.

Ownership doesn't want a salary cap because it also would require a salary floor, and the cheapasses would actually have to pay their players instead of enriching themselves.

They're just using the luxury tax/CBT as a de facto cap, with none of the ramifications of having a floor. Baseball revenues are up across the board, TV deals are up, and average and median salaries are down. The owners aren't losing money.

Just absolutely hurting for money right now.

The luxury tax always sucked, because everyone knew it was just a soft floor.

This stoppage is about putting in both a cap and floor and both sides angling to raise/lower their respective sides. Owners are willing to accept a floor, if the cap isn't sky-high to start and then moves 2-5% yearly. Players want a cap, but want to boost it as high as possible, set ridiculous rookie minimums and boost roster sizes also? Both sides are greedy, yes, but one side is both greedy and nonsensical.

Again, it's not owners who have driven the economics of the game to insane levels. Sticking a Harper, Machado or Pujols on a team means that numerous other positions are going to be filled with dregs. Teams can't compete with so many high-cost guaranteed contracts, when the rotation sucks after the 2nd guy or the infield is a continual revolving door of call-ups. Advocating for owners to just suck it up and pay more luxury tax or accept a high salary cap, aren't the solution here. Those costs will be passed onto the fanbase, as they always are.

You claiming to not take a side and only incorrectly parrot ownership bullshit is kind of par for the course for how stupid you are, though.
I'm not parroting ownership but just giving my perspective. Calling me names doesn't strengthen your position.

Quoting average salary is disingenuous at best, and then taking average salary and attributing that to "bench warmers" is a distortion of epic proportions.

But, it's probably not fair on my part to accuse you of shilling for the owners when you're too stupid to realize what you're actually posting.
