On a serious note, I did read that more lawsuits are expected. I am wondering if athletes outside of Michigan will also be suing? Could get interesting.

I think everyone involved will end up being named on a class action, who is actually held responsible will be determined by the yet to be know to us facts.

He arguable broke into the database originally while at the ravens, went undetected for 6 years before being hired by Michigan and continuing the same thing. I think the 3rd party company who let him have undetected access for 8 years is more responsible here.

How would anyone employing him know he had access to this 3rd party database?

It's a really bad look to only be focusing on "well, this other party should be getting sued" as opposed to your own universities massive shortcomings.

I have no problem thinking Warde should be fired for his handling of the hockey program, or Juwan slapping an opposing coach. But I have a hard time suggesting what else the university could have done here, with the information we currently have that is.

Without knowing any evidence, I can guarantee Michigan is getting sued. All you can do is mitigate the damages. @MAIZEandBLUE09 the institution with the deep pockets is getting sued, unless Michigan is countersuing (not seeing that happening). Weiss is a creep, if convicted, and I would love to throw him in the slammer myself.

Anyone can get sued. They’re definitely getting sued. Whether they have a case or not is up for discussion and will obviously change as more facts come out.

Right. I did think that. I thought the 3rd party site for tracking athletes was college related. With new information it seems like he’s had that the entire time. Which predates his employment at UM.

The FBI is treating Michigan as a victim, per an article I didn’t even link to here.

Again, unless Michigan knowingly covered something up I don’t see the connection other than he was employed by Michigan.

I think Michigan will get sued by the athletes at Michigan affected by this. I don't understand the complete story of how he got access to these databases, but it seems, being an employee at UM would give him some sort of access to the athletes at UM.

I think it's much more likely that he obtained stolen password lists from the "dark web" and just searched for .edu email addresses and was able to get into these accounts that way than him being some hackerman mastermind.

Hacking isn’t furiously typing on a keyboard while binary code flies across the screen like in the Matrix. It’s heavily reliant on social engineering typically and in this case, Weiss essentially had a cheat sheet in the form of a large database containing email addresses and passwords which he would attempt to use across platforms in hopes women used the same passwords for their other personal accounts. The indictment mentioned he was researching pet names, maiden names etc. This is pretty telling of his methodology. These details are the most common answers to security questions that generate when you submit a password reset request. So he was likely breaking in to accounts he couldn’t access with a password directly (but had access to the email associated with the account) by submitting a password reset. The point I’m trying to make is that this is all very simple stuff. This does not require a Masters in computer science.

I could be wrong but i'd assume he is involved with a larger ring of people doing this. I doubt he's the mastermind of it all. This is probably something that goes much deeper than Weiss overall when it comes to the database/hacking element.

The one thing I read is they had no evidence of sending pics to others or using the pics to blackmail or for monetary reasons. The NY DA for sexual cyber crimes said she has never seen a case like this and it is the most people affected when involving a single person.

I guess when you are making 800,000 a year -- you don't need to blackmail or hold it over a person for monetary gain. But from reading the article, it was like he had a collection of these athletes pics. It is so unbelievably creepy.

The guy needs to be in jail for a long time. I feel bad for his kids. The guy has a wife and 3 kids doing this. It is just a bizarre case.
