If you are 'gifting' them the tickets, that is essentially paying them. There is nothing out-of-pocket to the recipient. It's actually a monetary gain.

Do you know that their travel, accommodations, and meals, weren't also being paid?

It isn't. There is absolutely no NCAA rule that suggests people on coaching staffs can't buy tickets for people, and that is most certainly not in the NCAA definition of what a school employee is.

now if that person was on the payroll in some way, then yeah -- it becomes a violation.

The guys actual job is to try and decipher the other teams signals IN GAME. Every school has a guy on the sideline trying to do this. So him being in the ear in the OC and DC isn't a big thing.

Sign stealing goes on at every level, in every sport. What he did used to be legal until the NCAA put an end to it because not every school could afford to send coaches to future opponents games. It wasn't stopped because it was illegal, it was stopped to make it a level playing field for the schools who can't afford to do that.

As far as Harbaugh not knowing -- I will say this, if Harbaugh knew an analyst was paying with his own personal credit card to have random people film sidelines of future opponents -- he deserves to be fired for stupidity alone. I cannot fathom any of the coaches getting paid millions of dollars would let any staff member risk that by paying for tickets with a personal credit card. That is absolutely asinine.

The personal credit card tells me this wasn't some crazy plan by the coaching staff. It isn't as if you couldn't have had any number of random people purchase the tickets and no one would have any clue.

I understand that teams have a dude like this, but him chirping constantly in the coordinators' ears while they are actively trying to coach their unit on the field is not common.

My question on Harbaugh is, he had to have hired this guy. He was on the football team's staff. The idea that he came on board after being a "volunteer" for the school for years before that, and just suddenly went rogue without anyone knowing is way too far-fetched. He had been doing this stuff before he became a team employee, so how could Harbaugh not know what he was doing? If he was doing this at least back in 2021 and Harbaugh wasn't using any of his footage, why would he keep doing it in 2022 and 2023? That's thousands of dollars supposedly for nothing. None of that makes any sense.

As I said.... The evidence that the in person filming benefitted Michigan when playing their future opponents is overwhelming.

What is overwhelming about it? This is what I don't get either. Michigan State obviously changed their signs. It was 49-0. Are you saying it would have 70-0 if this didn't come out? Has the signs made JJ McCarthy a heisman candidate? Or did it make Corum all-american? Or did it get Hutchinson drafted #2 overall? Or Michigan tying the # of NFL draft pick in a year record? We will likely set the NCAA record in the NFL draft picks next year when everyone leaves. We have 17 or 18 players projected to be drafted next year.

That is why UM's record is what it has been the last few years. Prior to that -- UM was getting a few guys into the NFL, but rarely 1st or 2nd round type talent. Ben Herbert is the guy responsible for that. That is why he is getting paid over $1 million a year as the Strength and Conditioning coach.

Michigan hired him in 2022. Having someone on the sidelines interpreting signs seems like a valuable asset to any team (since that is legal).

If all of that was being paid for and there was no paper trail, you're talking about actual legal (and probably tax) issues beyond the NCAA. There's no indication that this actually happened.

I think not just the signs but all that sideline video would provide substantially more context than what most teams have.

The circumstanstantial evidence is bad on first glance considering they gave up 50 plus to TCU.

I've been trying to find examples in OSU games of this sort of behavior and can't find it. I know we have some analysts on the field, but when the OC/DC are actively coaching, I never see one and only one guy constantly in their ear.

It should have been. Michigan was flagged for illegal formation at the 4 yard line before the half with 9 seconds to go. The penalty caused a 10 second run off or it would have been 35-0. And UM pulled their starters again midway thru the 3rd quarter and stopped attacking.

I'm going to argue the NFL analysts have said no QB in CFB has made more NFL level throws than JJ McCarthy, which is why he is being mocked as a top 5 pick right now.

A little trivia for you. When JJ McCarthy is drafted in the first round -- he will be the 1st QB from Michigan drafted in the 1st round since............................................Jim Harbaugh.

You won't here me pumping up Michigan's schedule. It has been a joke. I don't even watch the 2nd half of most games. If you look up on this board about two months ago -- I said, Michigan's schedule doesn't start until week 10 or 11, whatever week we play PSU.

It's a bad look either way if the NCAA finds out he committed infractions. Either they hired the guy knowing he'd been doing this since at least 2021 and went along with it and then tried to deny it recently when it came to light, OR somehow Harbaugh's entire staff had no idea what this guy was doing while being employed by them.
