A story from Ohio State AD Gene Smith perfectly encapsulates the current state of the situation when it comes to athletes being paid.

They don’t want to get paid after signing with a school or putting up huge numbers. They want to be paid to simply visit.

“A practice of asking a school for a fee to simply visit campus has emerged; asking for $5,000 just to visit has become common. During visits, discussions now emerge regarding how much a student-athlete can expect from NIL,” Smith wrote in testimony for a Wednesday hearing before the House Committee on Small Business, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

I just hope baseball and basketball pay their recruits anywhere close to what football pays. 🤞

Schools will start paying it.

Yeah, this is where NIL needs to be reined in a bit.

First off, the money isn't supposed to come from the schools. So the school paying a kid to visit would be a violation of what few rules there seem to be.

Also, if the money comes from an NIL collective, that should be stopped because that's not how it's supposed to work.

Having said that, can't really blame the kid for asking. If you don't ask, the answers always no. lol

Hats off to the AD for bringing a spotlight on every recruit that comes to campus this season though. What a maroon.

I was hoping NIL would have the biggest impact on baseball. Donors would be able to match the >2nd round signing bonuses the MLB pays to be able to keep top talent at the college level. Plus not a lot of scholarships for baseball but who needs a scholarship if you have NIL.

I still think that will happen, just going to take more time than football has.
