Nah bro, no rewriting history. The biggest cry babies about NIL have been the OU fans here.

A story from Ohio State AD Gene Smith perfectly encapsulates the current state of the situation when it comes to athletes being paid.

They don’t want to get paid after signing with a school or putting up huge numbers. They want to be paid to simply visit.

“A practice of asking a school for a fee to simply visit campus has emerged; asking for $5,000 just to visit has become common. During visits, discussions now emerge regarding how mucstudent-athlete can expect from NIL,” Smith wrote in testimony for a Wednesday hearing before the House Committee on Small Business, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Pandora's Box has been opened.
I completely understand why recruits are asking to be paid to have to go to Columbus, Ohio. I'd demand more than $5,000 if they wanted me to come that the god forsaken campus and their stadium that looks like a toilet bowl. :hide:

i don't understand the angst.. tosu is a national brand that has a crazy fanbase.. should be eating in NIL and not give fucks about what people feel.. You aren't Michigan St or Iowa or WI.. You and UM should be eating that conference up.. you'll have some competetition with Oregon and SC coming in but they aren't your level if y'all get your shit together
Awful easy shouting down at the peasants while having donors like Joe Jamail and other dead TexasExs that left Bevo in the will.

“Spend the next four years of my life in Columbus? I need five grand just to consider that.”

LOL God bless Joe, but he wasn't funding NIL, the man loved seeing his name on buildings.. You know who is a donor that contributes to the TE room and the football team separately??

Nothing stopping the schools directing these collectives on the players they want paid though.

NIL is going to be impossible properly regulate period.
:fify:

Why should any entity even try to regulate NIL? Let the market do it.

it didn't man.. all his money went to the facilities.. guess you think the Moodys are also bankrolling the bball program because they wrote a 300 mil check for the new bball arena a few years ago?

Oklahoma is ranked anywhere from #6 to #1 in the value of college football program rankings. We're sitting at #5 right now in football recruiting for 2023. Oklahoma's far from broke. The current focus at OU from a spending standpoint is upgrading our facilities before we get into the SEC. The money being spent is awesome. Maybe foolhardy to some people but it's certainly awesome. And each sport is doing its dead level best to upgrade its talent level. It's a process. NIL $$$ is important at Oklahoma but for various reasons the intent is not to go out and try to buy good teams. The approach is to use NIL to augment recruiting, not supplant it. It will be interesting in a few years after the building phase at OU is completed to see how the $$$ will be spent. And since Joe Castiglione will not be at OU much longer the next AD is going to be facing some huge decisions about the direction Oklahoma will be going.

If NIL is being done the way I understand that it's supposed to be done, it's not about how much money the school itself has, it's about the NIL opportunities the school can attract.

So, in theory at least, what a school is spending on facilities, etc. should have no effect on NIL opportunities and vice versa.
