Ohio State AD Says Recruits Are Demanding Money Just To Visit Campus

If NIL is being done the way I understand that it's supposed to be done, it's not about how much money the school itself has, it's about the NIL opportunities the school can attract.

So, in theory at least, what a school is spending on facilities, etc. should have no effect on NIL opportunities and vice versa.
yeah NIL is for the athletes.. upgrades to the facility is on the school itself

Oklahoma is ranked anywhere from #6 to #1 in the value of college football program rankings. We're sitting at #5 right now in football recruiting for 2023. Oklahoma's far from broke. The current focus at OU from a spending standpoint is upgrading our facilities before we get into the SEC. The money being spent is awesome. Maybe foolhardy to some people but it's certainly awesome. And each sport is doing its dead level best to upgrade its talent level. It's a process. NIL $$$ is important at Oklahoma but for various reasons the intent is not to go out and try to buy good teams. The approach is to use NIL to augment recruiting, not supplant it. It will be interesting in a few years after the building phase at OU is completed to see how the $$$ will be spent. And since Joe Castiglione will not be at OU much longer the next AD is going to be facing some huge decisions about the direction Oklahoma will be going.

And the "value of the program" means exactly nothing. Do banks offer "program equity loans"?

The money has to come from the donors or the business supporters. And there is only so much $$$ available. USC has done wonders with the portal and NIL. Good on you because Southern Cal is doing well. OU is choosing to use the total amount of $$$ they can raise mostly for improvements at this time but for sure NIL and the portal have helped us too. USC will gradually get back to a balance of recruiting and portal transfers. But some schools will always believe they can buy success. That's a heaving crap shoot if a program wants long term stability.

I'm sure you can take a heisman trophy to Bank of America as collateral.. ?

corporations are the ones that usually come up with NIL deals to use the athletes to promote something. Or you can get your fans to contribute $10 a month to a collective that pays athletes for doing charity work.

those are for the handshakes sir..

see this is why you aren't SEC

We aren’t in the SEC because Mizzou jumped the line on us in an era where markets mattered.

But thank you for admitting those handshakes still come from donors and are legal now. That last part being the only thing that’s ever changed.

:fify:

Why should any entity even try to regulate NIL? Let the market do it.

Agreed.

I also don't think there's any way to completely consistently and fairly police NIL. Just too much going on. The NCAA couldn't even handle properly enforcing their own "rules" pre NIL most of the time.

The flood gates have been opened might as well just let it run it's course now.

lol you have donors or fans giving WV players change from the sofas they give out before they burn it..

BTW I have y'all winning this week :)

Columbus >>>>>>>> Ann Arbor

And it's not close.
It is cute you truly believe this. They don't call Ohio "The Arm Pit of America" for nothing. I don't even see Columbus on some of these lists.

1. The ones who call Ohio that are generally just angry michigan fans

2. Would be odd to include one of the biggest cities in the nation in a list of "college towns", don't you think?

well next year i'll be ann arbor then i'll be going to columbus the following year.. I'm guessing they both suck ass but are terrific visits because Arch conquers both schools

They've been called that for a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time. Has nothing to do with college allegiances.

And Austin, Texas is #1 on one of the lists and they have more people than Columbus. But it is entertaining to see you have excuses for things other than OSU football games.

LOL whatever you say. I've literally never heard anyone call it that outside of michigan fans.

Also what excuse could I need? Columbus is and has been one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. It's not on college town lists because it's not close to being a college town. I feel bad for Austin that with that many people living there, they're best known for a university. Keep grasping at those straws though, dude.

I liked the Ohio State campus. What really blew us away was the YUGE number of buildings. It was amazing. There's one for the Biology department and there's one for the Zoology department and over there's one for the Botany department and there's one for the Agronomy department and there's one for the Biochemistry department and over there's one for.......................... And they are all big ass stone buildings with well maintained lawns around them, bushes, flowers, etc. And no trash anywhere.

It's pretty nice but it's also become very corporate over the last 10-15 years. A lot of the cool smaller businesses that were there when I was a student have been annexed by the university and bulldozed to make way for large business nonsense. But it's all new and pretty, I guess.

With the way you just talked about Austin, TX, something tells me you have rarely ever left the state of Ohio.
