Seems odd if true

Doesn’t Betts have some of his contract deferred?

Wonder if Yamamoto will defer payments too. Dodgers could have A huge payroll paying retired players lol.

Don't see how MLB can allow that much of the contract to be deferred. Aren't they skirting the luxury tax with this deal?

No, they still calculate a good part of that towards luxury tax. Should be about $40m per year he will count.

But how isn’t it skirting the rules by not counting all of it. If the contract is for 10 years the total should count for the 10 years regardless of when Ohtani receives the money.

Thought it was only $28 million to count against it. I don’t see how MLB allows so much deferred contracts, since it bets on the financial viability of the individual team doing it. Should LA try to sue to get out of the contact 8+ years from now, or worse- default, all teams are hurt by the action.

Anyone know the tax law on this. So he’s going to be paying California taxes on 2 million of income but when he retires back to Japan the tax on that $680 million dollars California would’ve got leaves too? Not sure how a state that wants an exit tax is going to stand by on this one.

Did he not already spend his entire MLB career in the LA area, or

And another one

If baseball caught on in Italy after WWII instead of Japan the Mets would be signing all these guys.

12 years and over 400 million for a guy that’s never thrown an MLB pitch seems like a stretch. Gonna laugh when he turns out to be a lot closer to Dice-K than he is to Darvish

Dodgers gonna win 98 games next year. Braves gonna win 102.

Cardinals-Giants NLCS gonna be great

DiceK was topping his fastball at 90, not 100.

Dice-K was good his first two years, but it was painful watching him pitch. Felt like every batter got into a 3 ball count. Even in his sub-3 ERA season in 2008, he was getting bailed out by a lot of double plays and defense... not often you see a guy with a sub-3 ERA have a WHIP over 1.30. And while the K rates were good, they weren't great especially for someone with such wobbly command.

Darvish isn't worth it either. Not even close. I get he got injured but aside from last year he's been a number 3 at best the last decade.

I agree, but there was a period of time, mostly with the Rangers when Darvish was legitimately one of the best in the league. Darvish didn’t cost near this much though
