Smart just had to signal to the ref the timeout before the snap.

Not how timeouts work. The timeout is effective the minute he acknowledges it. Think of the coach on the sideline who is counting down with the ref and calls it at 1 second. Takes the ref one second to blow whistle and wave hands … click goes to 0, they reset it.

This is supposed to be the sequence:
Ref hears/sees time out signal.
Ref checks to make sure the person who called the time out is allowed to do so.
Ref then checks to see if the ball has been put in play. <=== The ref did not do this step.
If not, blows the whistle and waves like a parade princess. <=== The ref did this, even though the ball was already in play.
If the ball is already in play, the time out is not granted.

We're friends with a nice family who are very loud Georgia fans.

I just checked their Instagram and they were doing Shorts all through the game, celebrating every score and then radio silence.

At least they have the decency not to celebrate this "win."

You need better friends … why not celebrate this win? UGA earned it with a hell of a 4th quarter.
