Position players pitching

I can get turning to the bullpen if your other options are exhausted (blowout, extras going 15+ innings), but I can agree that it isn't as unique as it was a decade ago. I would rather see relievers be depended on for multiple innings.

But at the same time, the majority of these appearances are coming when games are essentially over. I don't think it's that big of a deal.
 
Darin Ruf pitches two innings of relief for the Mets last night after they got behind 13-1. He was their most effective pitcher

Team down 13-1. Starter lasted two innings thanks in part to an hour long rain delay. Perfect spot for a position player to pitch
 
Teams should be fined every time a position player pitches in a 9-inning game.

Oh, for the glory days of pure baseball when players didn't fraternize before games and wink and smile at each other from the mound/box. :thumbsdown:
 
Once upon a time, pitchers were position players. Many a pitcher, on days he didn't pitch (Babe Ruth for example) fielded a position.

Ruth never saw the field as anything other than pitcher his first three years. Started played some OF between starts starting in 1918, when he pitched far less often. After 1919, Ruth had a handful of games as a pitcher for the rest of his career.

Yes, it seems that he never got over that Dave Henderson home run in game 6 of the 86 ALCS, however there are folks in the know that said he had struggled with personal demons long before that. Kind of a sad story.
