Slab patio would mean we'd have to walk through the house and downstairs to make our food and then carry all the dishes and stuff back through the house. Our deck is right off the kitchen.

I guess my comment was more directed at people who have decks that are 16 inches off the ground. Like, put some steps in, and a hard patio surface.

I wish we had a walk-out, house I wanted to buy was a walk out and much better layout

You had nice set up deck wise prior to upgrades...
