Raiders fire Gruden

I have no idea. But they removed themselves from all the negative press it’s gonna bring until there’s something else for sports media to latch onto, and did what they can to minimize the distraction it will bring the organization.
They did indeed do that. And you’re right…my Chapelle comparison is falling apart all the more.

I just want to see more standing up to the narrative. Gruden would have been an imperfect candidate for that….both for what was exposed and for his minimal to negative value to the team.

But we already have one professional league completely stockholmed by the rage threats (IMO) and….silly of me to think the NFL would be any different.

At its basic level the handling of such situations won’t encourage the Grudens of the world to be a better humans. It will just continue to entrench them in the stance that they are not wrong.

Inclined to agree with this.

All those sensitivity trainings I took didn't necessarily make me any more sensitive. They just taught me what behavior to avoid if I didn't want repercussions.

It's fucking comical all the people railing against Gruden that don't have such clean closets themselves.

What will though? A slap on the wrist with some kind of suspension teaches the same lesson. Best anyone can do is just disassociate with that kind of stuff. In these cases even if corporations/organizations are doing it for the wrong reasons it’s still all they can do.

Just look at this thread. You’re the only one questioning the move in a way that attempts to apply any kind of nuance and doesn’t necessarily attempt to defend or downplay the comments. Anyone else who’s against it just doesn’t think what he said was that bad and he’s some kind of victim for having any consequences for having said it. You’re not gonna reach anyone who thinks that way by suspending him or making him make some kind of apology, they’d think that’s unfair too, and no organization is gonna go through the effort for someone who’s proving to be disposable in the first place. So what other response is there?

Totally agree. I’m not playing naive and saying everyone starts rowing the boat ashore if they took this training.

But, even just reinforcing such training would still be a win for the organization and league. It at least used to be good enough for those offended as they were engaged in educating against hate, and now they are just wrapped into such a hateful narrative.

Hate merely breeds hate, and it seems to have done a great job neutralizing any compassion from many that used to have this trait.

I give zero fucks about either one of them. Gruden got what he deserved for what he did. If Eminem gets booted from the halftime show for similar issues, he’ll have no one to blame but himself. It’s about personal accountability. Unlike you, I think it should apply to everyone.

he had the audacity to send a private email expressing his personal opinion... though I'd say the topless pics are over the line.

Still, there needs to be a separation of work and personal life. I get that most employment is "at-will", but even most employment contracts have a clause about your personal life being your own as long as you don't make it clear you're representing the company.

You never viewed topless pics?

Back in the old days when I said something that a co-worker didn't like, they just sent me to the training department for a refresher on non-discrimination thing-a-mummies.

Then I would come back and waive that certificate in their faces and go "how ya like me NOW, ya cross-dressing dago guinea fagola?"

And it would be another year before they could send me back to the training department.

Man, those were the days
I miss them days!

But again, they aren’t the same thing at all, even if what Chapelle said was exactly word for word what Gruden expressed. Netflix expects Chapelle to bring controversy. He’s bringing views with it, it’s part of his job. If it was to the point where Netflix saw their subscribers dropping and could link it to his special or something they aired, they would drop it without hesitation.

Companies don’t give a single fuck about any of this other than how it relates to profit.
Very good point.

When it comes to entertainment, controversy creates cash, to quote Eric Bischoff.

You insensitive, conniving bastage. Brilliant.
