Scenario: Let Ball Drop?

Or he was late on the fastball and has no chance against the wipeout slider coming next
If your Ace is still in the game in the 9th, zero chance he has a wipeout slider still in the arsenal. And his fastball likely has lost a few mph's.

it absolutely is not just as likely that a guy hits a 2-2 single(or more) to score the run.

I trust my pitcher even in the first.

Don't trade outs for runs on a foul ball.
Well, coaches everywhere disagree. You take the bird in hand over the hope to get an out 100% of the time in the first inning.

That’s why I said Josh Hader

And that's why this has gotten out of hand. I have OP scenario, you introduced another, Roy has introduced another. Who knows anymore.

Bottom line, you take outs when you can get them and let everything else fall where it may.

Even if you have to lay out and dive backwards to make the catch on the foul ball?

I’m gonna trust my closer to keep it tied and force the hitter to put the ball in play to get that run in

In that scenario, the closer is likely pitching.
Still too many variables. Is it a slicing foul hit that is going to be close to the line, perhaps fair? Is it a deep shot close to the wall where the fielder is unlikely to get there without a dramatic diving catch anyways?

OP lets my balls drop on his chin.

According to you, it doesn’t matter. Take the out, it doesn’t matter that the winning run is guaranteed to score on that foul fly ball

Sure it matters. If you have to work really hard to even get to an obvious foul ball then you let up, you aren't getting there and letting it drop infield-fly like. And if it is close to the line you better catch it or risk it being fair, ballgame, and in kangaroo court.

So in the scenario where it’s TIED, bottom ninth, runner on third, 1 out, some of y’all are advocating catching the deep ball to foul territory? And letting the runner tag up and win the game? Wtf? Hoping for a slip or pulled hammy or???

I wouldn’t even do that in the top of the ninth.

In the OP, you catch the ball. You can't get 27 outs without getting 26 outs.

In the above scenario, you let the ball drop. BTW, in the above scenario, you walk the bases loaded.

Never pass up an out. If you can catch it, you catch it

But hurt your team and catch it when it guarantees the winning run scores
No, if you get to the ball you catch it. You don't stand and watch it drop because of the situation.

Do what you want, I don't give a fuck. But bring this scenario up in the midst of fellow coaches and they'll tell you how wrong you are if you think you ever intentionally let a ball drop because you want to save a run.

If it's the winning run, you do, without question
