Alberts was brought in as AD in July last year. Should he have fired Frost after the Iowa game and a (3-9) finish?
Yes.
However, there were still a lot of believers (fans) that the program was "close" to getting back to winning with all the one score losses. Firing him then would have left many wondering "What if Frost had gotten one more year?"
If Frost's replacement comes in and doesn't meet expectations then Alberts was sure to get the blame since Frost was "Oh so close to turning things around".
Alberts did what he could in restructuring Frost's contract and getting all those offensive assistants replaced last December, but he needed Frost to continue showing his hand. The (1-2) start with losses to Northwestern and a G5 and the struggle with FCS North Dakota were enough to finally get the majority of Frost supporters onboard with letting him go.
Believe it or not there are still Frost supporters out there defending the home state boy who won an NC, but they are considerably fewer than last December.
