They probably didn't have a lot of options on short notice. I am not sure why the SEC would make them cancel that game.

It is still ridiculously high in 2023. It gets more manageable next year but that is only one year. Is it worth paying and exiting early? We will see. Nebraska killed Scott Frost early and cost them a lot of money when they could have waited 2 weeks.

I guess it will depend on how frustrating staying in Big12 becomes for both programs.

$7.5 million is a lot different than $42 million.

Look at the ratings that Texas vs Alabama and Arkansas last season pulled and you will know why. The SEC doesn't want to give CBS those ratings and is holding them back for the new deal to blow it out of the water.

That is why 2024 is in play as that is when the new SEC deal starts and the new teams join the Big 12.

Sankey was heavily involved in the CBS negotiations and they are the ones that told him no when aTm and Missouri joined. CBS was going to have to make a monster offer to keep the SEC and ESPN wasn't going to underbid.

This is the only thing that makes sense now from that perspective. It is still pretty pathetic though to have the game cancelled for a tv contract.

I wonder why they keep Alabama-Texas?

No matter how you slice it, the Big 12 has a solid GOR and doesn't have to play ball with TX/OU.

Even in a negotiated settlement, it would be based at minimum on $42 million/yr Big 12 monies.
If based on SEC monies, a settlement would be based on $54 million.

Say there's a 50% settlement on 2024 @ SEC value (which the Big 12 would obviously go after), that's still a $27 million haircut to each of the TX/OU athletic budgets.

I wonder why they keep Alabama-Texas?

Because the TX/Bama return game is next year. i.e. pre 2025

Georgia cancelled their Oklahoma game next season because the return game was scheduled for 2031. Oklahoma's gonna be in the SEC in by then anyway.
Tennessee cancelled their series with Oklahoma in 2024 because the return game would be after Oklahoma joins in 2025.

They are playing in 2024 as well. I was talking about the Texas @ Alabama game that is on the schedule above.

Yeah but they could have just done the return game as a Conference matchup. Not sure I understand the reasoning for the cancellation.

As in a 9th conference game when the rest play 8?

Where are they gonna fit a Mercer or Western Carolina in there then?

We are doing conference games but that wasn't what I mean.

Say Tennessee plays Oklahoma @ Oklahoma in 2024. Well just schedule a conference game in 2025 for Oklahoma @ Tennessee (or 2026) and start the series that way. Seems like an easy fix.

yeah next season game will be an ESPN/ABC primetime game.. pretty sure it's going to do huge numbers again.. Especially with Ewers returning

Notice that they didn't make Bama cancel UT. That's because the return trip will be before OU comes into the league. UGA would not get a return trip from OU until 2031. They don't want to be limited to having to work the IC schedule around the UGA OU game already being scheduled. Same with UTjr's games. That's why we were told to cancel.
