I think it only works if there's ample supply of DNA out in the environment. So, the wooly mammoth, moa, dodo, passenger pigeon, Bill Clinton, etc.

I'm no geneticist, but my understanding is that not all of the animals are the same in terms of being viable. The truth is that gene insertion and cloning are relatively easy, but a surrogate and donor material aren't always possible. For a woolly mammoth, presumably an African elephant would be used, though viable offspring could not even be produced for an African-Indian hybrid elephant (though it was arguably 'close').

It's not entirely clear how these companies can profit enough on these ventures to keep going. If getting the actual animal from 10,000 years ago or more is the goal, we can't do it yet. The near-term tech is sequencing and inserting genes; presumably this means designer pets or ensuring your children have blue eyes.
