TV Series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

This prequel of Star Trek: The Original Series and spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, May 5, 2022. Trailer:

I have already thrown in the towel on Disco. Picard is better, but I just don’t like serial Trek. I will give this a try, but I am not committing myself to it. I almost prefer Kelvin Trek to Nu Trek.

I’m optimistic about this. The best original Star Trek episode is the pilot which this is basically an reinvention of.

So far, so good

Discovery:
S1: good
S2: great
S3&4: Let’s all just sit and talk about our anxieties and pat each other on the back and soothe each other and literally even sing lullabies to each other.

Did he have his experience on Disco, or is it supposed to be an off camera thing that we will learn more about as the show progresses? Is his experience supposed to be the events of The Cage? I don’t remember the Talosians giving him any foresight.

I assume the events he foresaw are the events that put him in the chair that he is in during the Managerie? I may need to rewatch at least the beginning of pt 1 to see exactly what they say to explain his appearance (Jeffery Hunter declined to participate in the episode, and the character was scarred head to toe by massive burns)

Just watched the opening scene of The Managerie.

Kirk mentions he met Pike once. (His serving on the Enterprise under Pike is a blatant break from canon)

Spock served with him for 11 years, 4 months, 5 days

Pike was doing a standard inspection of a cadet ship (old class J starship). One of the battle plates ruptured and Pike was hit with Delta rays.

”He went in, bringing out all those kids that were still alive.”

Never mind. I didn’t realize that was his brother (who we actually met (at least his body) in TOS).

Pike sees his future in the Disco S2 episode 12 “Through the Valley of Shadows”

So far this series has surpassed my expectations and I can honestly say there isn’t a character I don’t like.

I can honestly see this running for multiple seasons and then morphing into the original series characters.

I like it and they just introduced the Gorn which I suspect will be an ongoing antagonist.

This week’s episode was a classic submarine movie. Not necessarily my cup of tea, but very well done.

only 4 eps in, but so far the best of nuTrek. And I love they are going episodic rather than serial.

I think the Gorn represents an ongoing storyline that will web through the episodes like the Borg did for STNG and the Klingons did for OST.

I really like this Start Trek and think it has the potential to be the best overall series to date.

My only small complaint is I think they went overboard with female representation as it seems everyone on the bridge other than Pike and Spock is female. I've got nothing against female representation but if I'm noticing it then it's a bit much but then again I like all the characters as well.

Have you watched any Disco? There was some kind of galactic event that killed off all straight white men, and they haven’t mentioned it yet on the show. Maybe they addressed it in the second half of the most recent season. I don’t know because I bailed on that show.

I've watched 2 1/2 seasons of Discovery but got bored halfway through the 3rd. I keep thinking I will go back but just haven't had the desire. Made through 2 episodes of Picard and was bored so I bailed.

I'll say this, the first two seasons of Discovery I really liked but once Michael went through the wormhole it just seemed like they were circling the shark on water skis.

I never “really liked” Disco. But I thought maybe there was a chance it would find itself and settle in as a decent add to the universe. That never happened. It just got worse and worse. I may do a full binge years in the future, but I don’t see me watching any more of it any time soon. It is dead to me.

Picard is OK. Still south of Enterprise, but also still watchable.

SNW is still not at DS9 level, but that is a hard bar to clear. DS9 was a GREAT show. I wish they wouldn’t have as many blinking lights and camera glare (which is obviously an intentional motif with nuTrek), but that is a nitpik. I like the story telling so far and as I have said a million times already, the episodic template is a very nice change that I am really enjoying.

You nailed another thing I have noticed. They have obviously built the new sets on both Discovery and SNW to have pre-loaded special effects almost like a ride at Disney. If you watch these episodes back to back you pick up the same fire effect in the back and sparks coming from the same places. The fire is really ridiculous because there are crappy artificial flames going up the sides of the lift doors but no one responds to it. I get that it is a budget thing and will just have to deal but every time they get into a skirmish we know where the fire and sparks are going to come from.

Michael would cry at a rat killin.

The last 2 years of the show go like this

Any crew member says
We're all going to die!
30 seconds until the ship/universe/planet/dimension blows up!
Shields are down, there's a photon torpedo headed right at us!

Michael tilts her head to the side like a dog, gives sad eyes with tears in them, and says Well let's talk about your feelings up until about 5 seconds before the cataclysmic event, then we'll fix it.

So I’m watching Strange New Worlds e9, and after the first few minutes, I’m like, “Are they just doing an Alien/s copycat episode?” Then they introduce the quiet, dirty faced little girl survivor, and I’m like, “Yep, this looks like a complete Alien/s copy.” And then they just go full on Alien/s copycat down to the last detail. YTF would they do this?!?

I saw the Alien/s thing as well. True, they haven’t mentioned much about the Gorn to this point. So giving them this “ability” doesn’t exactly break anything, but it is cheesy. The Gorn have an advanced society. They are “intelligent”. They have government, military, and have achieved space travel. The way they were portrayed in this episode is that they are completely animalistic and incapable of building a society.

I am still enjoying the show as a whole. I am willing to accept the background they are giving the Gorn, and I am giving them the rope they need to FULLY tell that story.

Solid season start to finish. Was very impressed with STSNW.
