Based on the zombie (okay, technically, fungi) apocalypse video game series of the same title. Teaser trailer:

 
At first I was thinking it looks surprisingly low budget for HBO but it looked better as the trailer went on. I'm in.

Interesting to see the snow scenes, I'm guessing the first season is going to go the full way through of the first games plot then.

I've been looking forward to watching this for about a year. I'm a huge fan of the video game and am PUMPED.

Gonna watch it as soon as I'm done cooking dinner.
 
I watched it last night, but I was doing other things and didn’t give it the attention it deserved. I WANT to wait to binge it, but I also don’t want to wait.

if I get a chance to rewatch the first episode sometime this week, I may continue withthe real-time viewing. If not, I may just punt so I can binge it instead.
 
I thought the first episode was alright. Gonna need to see more before I decide if I want to keep watching, but my guess is this show is just gonna be a worse version of the game's story. And honestly I wasn't as blown away with the game's story as a lot of people seemed to be. It was pretty good for a video game, but I'm not sure I remember more than 1/3 of the story overall. And most of what I remember is all stuff at the very beginning and tail end.

It was better than I thought it was going to be though. I went in thinking it would suck mostly because I don't buy Pedro Pascal as Joel, the girl playing Ellie was just awful in GoT, and they got rid of the whole spore concept for the fungus.

Ditching the spores is really what I think will make this a poor adaptation in the end. That concept of a fungal zombie type infection was the best thing the story has going for it. It's different than the normal zombie shit we've seen a million times. Now I guess the infection just spreads through bites? And that's it? Wow. Just like every other damn zombie thing. Good job HBO.

If they're not doing spores, I'm not sure why they added that scene with the scientist talking about the real life cordyceps fungus at the start of the show. That fungus spreads mostly via spores. The infected ants don't bite each other's necks. They go into the colony, die, and expel the spores everywhere.

The reveal that Ellie is immune to the fungus also took a big hit without the spores. They had to force it in at the end of the episode and made it almost a throw away line.

"She's infected!"

"No, I'm not. I'm immune!"

"Okay, lets go then."

Great.

They didn't ditch the spores. Spores aren't introduced in the game until after they leave the quarantine zone.

And while the first episode didn't line up exactly with the game, all of the important elements were there.

This show is gonna be awesome.

I read it was something to do with not wanting the actors in gas masks a lot, but I don't recall the game having the characters in masks so much that it would be distracting.

And regardless, I'm pretty such there were people in masks a shit ton in Chernobyl and that was a big hit for HBO. Could be wrong about that though, never watched Chernobyl.

Makes sense. If you cast someone like Pascal, you don’t want to hide him behind a mask the whole show…

Why do they insist on trying to give a legit background story to the fungus? There were enough issues with the story in the game, but at least they left it vague on purpose as far as I could tell. Thus far these added scenes from the past make no sense if they still insist this is the cordyceps fungus.

And god damn, the zombie walking up and making out with Tess was just bat shit retarded. I bet some writer was pretty excited that he finally got to whack off to a real life version of his bad fan fiction though. Good on that guy for pulling one over on the folks at HBO I guess.
 
Another great episode. I really enjoy the backstory stuff.

The setting is super awesome. They are sticking to the game's aesthetics quite a lot.

Episode three looks like it's gonna be a banger, too.

Haven't watched the new episode yet but that's good to hear that there is more backstory stuff. The first half hour or whatever part of the first episode before it moved to current day was the best part of the episode for me.
