TV Series The Last of Us

Most people seem to talk about key points of show, but here are my thoughts:

1. Decent show overall and unlike other video game fiction (like the Doom movie), it follows the story
2. I felt like there wasn't enough zombie encounters or action scenes. At the very least, there should have been that underground level in Kansas City with the generator and zombies attacking
3. Removing the spores makes the fungus storyline make 0 sense as explained well in this thread
4. Episode 3 felt a little like a filler and love letter to homosexual relationships and didn't add much to the show. You also had the episode with Ellie and her friend with a kiss scene but that one felt on point to the story and not like a filler. Episode 3 felt like a filler for the most part and a way, as the Critical Thinker would put it, to give "THE MESSAGE".

However, overall I would say it was compelling. I felt the acting was good and story was decent even if was mostly a regurgitation of the video game.

The Bill/Frank episode just felt like them punching their “message” card. Make “Frank” “Francine” instead, and it is a completely pointless episode. Ellie crushing on her friend, after the Bill/Frank story, made the show border on Sense8. If the Bill/Frank thing didn’t exist, it would have been totally fine.

I do feel like the Ellie/Riley episode was very relevant as it gave a background on how Ellie got bit and her fear of being alone and why she got stuck on Joel.

It is pretty much Ellie's version of what Episode 1 is for Joel. Sure it also had the LGBT "The Message" but at least it is very on point with the story. I can somewhat stand Woke if it at least fits with story and the story isn't being messed up or diverted away/ruined to make room for it (*cough* Star Wars *cough*).

Hollywood has always been woke, at least since I was born, it was probably a little more subtle with it in the past and entire stories weren't diverted/ruined to fit it in. Issue with woke today is that the storylines are shit as well. I also watched a video referencing Quentin Tarantino saying we are in the worse age of Cinema. I disagree but I think it comes off that way because a lot of big franchises, notably Star Wars, have flopped. However, there are other movie and shows that are excelling.

I don't buy into movies being considered good because they are art pieces as well. For example, I think a movie like the original Pirates of the Caribbean, are excellent because they just entertain you from start to finish. The Last of Us pretty much did that as well. Which makes it a great TV series despite its flaws. Not everything has to be the next Citizen Kane and frankly, those type of movies don't often sell as well anyways.

I agree with just about everything here. I wouldn’t have had a prob with the Elie crush story, if they hadn’t already had the Bill/Frank thing. And the Bill/Frank thing really only bothered me because it was completely unnecessary (make it Bill/Francine instead and there is absolutely zero point to the episode).

they wanted to expand on a storyline from the game that they found interesting. There were minor tweaks to the timeline but it did not affect the story at all.

and guess what? It got people talking about the show, which is ultimately what they want.

shit, they very likely will get nominated for an award or 2 based on that episode.

Whould you be saying the same thing if it were Bill/Francine?

I mean, I think he was gay in the game, I don't think it would have made a difference either way. It was a backstory that highlighted some of the elements of the pandemic over the years starting off with how they rounded up the people only to slaughter them. Threat of raiders, etc. Gay, straight, the relationship aspect was more about Frank being a huge introvert conspiracy nut letting himself open up and trust somebody.

*shrugs* i thought it was a good episode. granted, maybe i just liked seeing ron swanson in that environment.

I was most bugged about trying to figure out where i knew Frank from. Turned out it was White Lotus and Welcome to Chippendales (which was a shit load better than I expected going into it, fucking wild story, truth is stranger than fiction as they say).

Bill/Frank was hinted at as being a couple in the game (iirc), but I don’t think it was spelled out. Also (again, iirc), they were very minor characters (only referenced?) without any back story at all in the game. Going into the deep dive story of them is 95% show created. And I just think it is very out-of-left-field.

Joel gets a half episode back story. Ellie gets a 1 episode back story (1.1 episode if you count her birth). 2 rando characters who are essentially just mentioned in the game get their own bubble episode. Very much like Nikki and Paulo. The gay aspect, to me, just explains why they got their episode. It never would have happened if it were Bill and Francine.

Very overrated season. A good video game show but overall didn't do a whole lot to separate itself from the already beaten to death style of show from the Walking Dead.

The first 3 episodes were really interesting with the flash back stuff. The flash back stuff was the best part of the show although the mall flash back episode was god awful. Beyond those three episodes though the only two that really stood out to me as good were the one were the Karen leader of hardened men (which was unrealistic and never explained why they were following this woman just giving them shit) all got wiped out by this big swarm of the whatever creatures at the end of the episode. And then the second to last episode was really good as well. The rest of the season very meh.

I will say, I played the game, I think it was the second game I got after Horizon Zero Dawn when I bought a PS4 well after they had been out. I remembered the opening. I remembered the giraffe. When they went into the museum i remembered that differently with the clickers. I sort of remembered going to kill the sniper when they met the cats in st. louis. and i remember the giraffe, that said, once the end game hospital sequence started, i remembered it off that bat. for some reason i blocked out the creepy pedo portion of it. great episode, rough seeing it play out.

This show didn't seem anything like walking dead to me. I love how you speak as though your opinion is fact, and in total absolutes. Stfu you knowitall know nothing fuck. You talk about shows like you wrote and directed some successful shit.

Whould you be saying the same thing if it were Bill/Francine?
sure why not...it expands on a love story that the creators of the show wanted to tell.

What more do you want to know about Joel? They told you what motivates him and why he is doing what he does and he is going to get multiple seasons where we get to build on the character.

Looking back, the show wasn't so much about the zombies as much as it was the other surviving groups that had somehow gotten that far and what they were willing to do or wanted to make their survival what they wanted.

the religious cult, the woman with the city under her thumb, Frank and Bill...I feel like that was more the story than we are trying to survive these zombies...we are trying to survive the rest of humanity.

Finished it up last night. Overall, I thought it was pretty good. Sure, the Bill and Frank ep seemed a little over the top, but I still thought it was good. Kinda liked how each episode sort of hit a different group of people and how they were surviving.

I think that is exactly what it comes down to.
