How much damage will we have with opt outs for the first bowl game in forever?

Probably not much, Usually kids opp out to get ready for NFL draft, probably very few on roster fit that description.

Horseshit second half. Run the damn ball. Catch the damn ball. Hold onto the damn ball. Tackle the damn ball carrier. Complete shit that we didn't score in the second half. Complete shit the 13 points they scored. All mistakes by us, nothing great Iowa did, all of it on our guys for not doing their damn job.

Dominate 99% of game and lose. It’s unbelievable

Early today, trouble sleeping.

Rhule needs to go hard on the discipline front this spring/summer. A lot of seniors going away and they made a lot of mistakes that cost us plays. I don't like Iowa or Minnesota but both those teams seem to limit mistakes that cause them to lose and a lot of that starts with the mentality of the Head Coach.

Offense: Hopefully can keep Dana at OC and new WR coach. Torn on OL coach, it's one that needs more discipline.

Defense: I'd hate having to install another new system. Guess just see what happens with TW. I'd like to see a more aggressive secondary, too much zone and not good enough in 1 on 1 coverage.

ST - new coach for sure. This team would make a huge jump just from competent ST play. Kick returns constantly being behind just fair catching it, horrible blocking all around, not even attempting punt returns. Kickoff coverage is particularly bad. Hohl had been good, bad snaps can't happen when it's the guy's only job.

Playerwise:
D, I feel somewhat decent about even though losing a lot. could really use a big DT, van poppel who was redshirting looked good against Iowa. Jeudy has been looking better too but need depth. Need a DE or OLB to transfer in or step up to be a consistent pass rushing threat. DBs need to practice, practice, practice tight coverage, I think talent is there just need a ton more reps.

O, DR to gain some damn pocket presence and urgency. Maybe it's just me, maybe others see calmness, but I see it as more nonchalant attitude and that rubs off and then you have WRs running poor routes and not blocking that hard. He's only a freshman but hopefully makes a big jump with this year's experience and can start seeing the field better, he missed a ton of open guys by focusing on first read and not quickly progressing through all reads.
OL could use a good transfer or two, not sure on young guys. Same at WR. TE and RB seem ok, I guess could always use a game changer but EJ really came on there.

Thoughts?

Nailed it!

Better WR play will go a long way to turning the corner with this program. I thought the OL played well. Still seeing boneheaded tackling attempts on defense. Couldn't decide if Raiola was calm & unrattled or going thru the motions as he contemplates transferring.
I thought play calling looked good for the most part. That stupid reverse to Carter Nelson was a head scratcher.

Word is that Tony White has accepted a DC positions at FSU.

Anyone else heard this?

Pretty much agree all around.

I am worried Rhule doesn't discipline enough. He has or had solid motivational speeches, but if the players don't have the proper discipline, then that motivation isn't going to last.

Offense - Really hoping they throw 2 mil or so at Dana to keep him. Agree with needing a new WR coach, our WRs aren't getting open and we supposedly have some serious speed, doesn't seem like it. Plus every WR seemed to drop EASY catches throughout the year costing us games.

Defense - I definitely agree with wanting to see more man coverage. It seems that TW doesn't have any confidence in his players to handle that. I am probably in the minority, but I have not been impressed with our defense under White. While I am not denying it improving somewhat vs what we saw under Frost, it still leaves a lot to be desired. My understanding is that TW was going to be leaving at the end of the year either way, to make room for Bishop coming up as DC. Hope Rhule knows what he is doing here.

ST - new coach is needed. Are we going to get it? Honestly... I doubt it. I hear Rhule talking about ST in the press conferences, he pretty routinely says things like 'ST is improving', not sure what happens during practice, but in game results have been pretty awful for most of the season.

I think you may be more confident than I am when it comes to players, but I think that is because I am just not seeing improvement year over year in the players. Gifford for example (imo), looked much better last year than this year and I think there are many players I could say that about if I'm being completely honest.

Completely agree with everything regarding DR, he's got plenty he needs to work on.

We are probably gonna need a few transfer portal players this year. OL, DL, WR, LS lol.

You really think Railoa is considering of transferring?

I'd like to think that he is happy where he is. But I'm not confident that he is.
A QB with faster open receiver processing and running skills can be had if he goes. DR is hosting a youth QB clinic/camp at Pius X coming up.

This would have stung more last year
Well, thoughts on replacement?

I posted this on the main CFB thread about this topic.... someone to look into, potentially a hidden gem? But might be one of those cases where it is really the head coaches doing.

Right off the bat, I'm curious about Jesse Bobbit as a replacement. Probably get on the cheap too. He is the current DC for South Dakota St. That team is averaging 9.5 ppg against FCS competition. 12ppg if you include their blowout loss to Oklahoma St in week 1.

South Dakota St went 15-0 last year, winning the natty, but that was Bobbits first year. They averaged 9.2ppg that year.

But he did play for South Dakota St, so maybe he wants to stay there?

I thought maybe it was John Butler's spot if TW left, but not really sure. Phil Snow also on staff as Analyst and might be a hire.

I'd go after Jim Leonhard. Need to bring that sort of defensive mentality Wisconsin had before Fickel took over. Really surprised he didn't land somewhere better as another DC but then I started reading that he hates recruiting, not sure with the new roster limits if you could entice him back, where Rhule recruits and he can focus more on development.

Their head coach, Jimmy Rogers was DC from 2019-2023, so I'd put the good defense on him, not the first year DC. Would Rogers leave for a big time DC job? Or would he rather be a HC several years and potentially jump like Cignetti or Klieman?

Matt Entz who followed Klieman left to coach LBs at USC, so I'd try Rogers before I'd go to Bobbit.
