The PAC-10 is winning

This is another reason why realignment/brands are so important right now.

You could have top ten Oklahoma State and Iowa State playing each other but that maybe overshadowed by a B1G or SEC matchup at the same time.

I will say this, someone who grows up mostly watching SEC games is very unlikely to watch Illinois and Northwestern but if there is a close Penn State vs. Ohio State game, they are tuning in. People down here will watch Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, and Wisconsin. Heck, even Nebraska sometimes because they have the NAME.

I watched OU-Nebraska last year over some SEC matchups just because of the programs/name and the interest behind the rivalry. Sometimes I will watch Oregon, USC, FSU, etc. However I am probably not going to watch a Baylor vs. Iowa State type game.

As I stated, if an SEC matchup is between two highly ranked teams, then it's in my rotation.
However, those types of games are the exception rather than the norm.

Bama has only played Georgia during the regular season twice in the last 10 years. Both being blowouts (38-10) and (41-24) where I'd have changed the channel.

Just because two teams play a lot of games doesn't mean they are Rivals.
Not once in my life have I ever considered Oklahoma State a 'Rival'.

An in-state Power 5 program in the same conference for over a century is definitely going to be classified as a rival, regardless of the record. Tennessee-Vandy has been lopsided through most of its history as well (maybe not quite as bad) but it is still a rivalry game.

Alabama's big matchups most seasons have been Auburn, LSU, and Texas A&M.

Alabama has been very favorable on scheduling mostly due to Tennessee no longer being a power. If Tennessee is at Fulmer's level, Alabama's schedule looks entirely different.

LSU vs. Florida is traditionally been a strong game lately. Both programs were the two strongest SEC teams in the 2010s and have been ranked often this decade as well.

Florida's situation with Dan Mullen is one of the weirdest that I have seen in College Football. It looked like the perfect hire and he hit the ground pretty good at Florida with them regularly being in the top 10 most of his time there but the team totally quit on him last season and he quit on Florida as well. He put the school into a position where they had to fire him despite having the strongest record there since Urban Meyer.

LSU also hit a high water mark in 2019 only to fall off massively the past two seasons.

Auburn seems to be in a free fall as well. Not sure firing Malzahn was the right decision.

Those three programs do drive higher ratings because they have been good recently. Sure if you take 2021, they all sucked but in seasons prior to 2021, they had top 10 finishes or in the case of LSU (a National Title).

Does having a stupid Trophy make it a real rivarly? Asking for Illinois

Again...... All of those things mean more to an SEC homer than they do to those in other conferences/regions.

With the exception of IF they're both highly ranked, which is not the norm.

Even then, a fan of a team (not in the SEC) is going to watch their favorite team in the same time-slot on a different channel. At best they temporarily flip to said SEC game during commercials.

Funny how TX/OU fans immediately became SEC :nutswinger:

Outside of highly ranked matchups (of which there are maybe 3 at best), very few outside of SEC territory are watching Missouri vs South Carolina.

They'll be watching their regional games that matter to them. Particularly opponents of their favorite team.

In the last 10 years, Alabama and Georgia have only played each other twice in the regular season. Even then, both were blowouts.

You think I'mma watch #1 Bama paste #14 Miami 44-13, or #12 Ole Miss 42-21, or Mississippi St 49-9, or Tennessee 52-24?

Nope.... I'm watching Big 10 games.
I rather watch TXHSFB games that Illionois vs MN.. i don't care if it's a 13-10 nailbiter

You could say the same about Martinez, but I'll still be interested in how he does at Kansas St.

Not really my point, tho.

If @Thiefery says he's not interested in how Casey Thompson does at Nebraska, he'd be lying.
Bro I just hope he has another terrific game vs ou and wins next month.. but will I be watching NU games for him?? No.. Too busy watching my Horns win or lose.. I usually tune into the bigger game of the day.. if that happens to be Bama vs LSU or tosu vs msu.. so be it..

But I really don't tune into games to watch Iowa st take on KSU or Illinois taking on Iowa.. But if u do I get it..it's regional

Teams have more than one rivals.

Hell, Tennessee-Vandy is often an entertaining game. Even when we were good, Vandy often played us very tough (see 1996, 1997, 2002, etc.).

Oklahoma and Tennessee have some similarities in that they have "rivals" that are HISTORICALLY far weaker than them in football but are local such as Missouri and Okie State and therefore claim other rivals that really don't have a lot of geographical connections but were rivals because they stood in the way of both getting to a championship (Florida and Georgia for Tennessee and Nebraska for Oklahoma).

They both do have a border rival that is (or should be) elite.

Alabama with Tennessee and Texas with Oklahoma.

Alabama-Tennessee was a rivalry that dates back to 1930s-1960s when Alabama and Tennessee were often the two best programs in the SEC. However, the rivalry, has for the most part, sucked in the modern era because when one has been good, the other has been terrible. Saban has totally outclassed Tennessee to the point that I don't find the game even fun to watch anymore. Saban sucks up a lot of the talent that Tennessee would get in the past so they always enter the game with far better athletes. We can give them a scare here and there (like last year or 2015) but for the most part it isn't competitive.

Very frustrating to watch as a fan.
I understand. You may have missed that I used “ THE” rival… in capitals.

Thanks for making my point, once again.

People outside of SEC territory are NOT tuning into SEC football "Just because it's SEC football"

They're watching their team or other regional games.

Exception if both SEC teams are highly ranked which is rarely the case. Even then a viewer's going to watch their favorite team over that highly ranked matchup. The highly ranked matchup would only get viewers who's teams are not in a competing timeslot.

CFP must really suck for some people

Here is a snapshot of Florida-LSU since 2010. 8 out of 12 seasons, both were ranked. Only once were both unranked. To say Alabama-Georgia is the only SEC matchup is a little silly. I could post Florida-Georgia or Alabama-Auburn and you likely have similarities.

I mean, I somewhat agree with your overall premise, I just disagree with statement that Alabama and Georgia are the only SEC Schools that matter from a National Perspective. Auburn, Florida, and LSU are all still considered solid programs.

Your favorite games are when your own team is playing. But let's be honest, right up there is getting to sit back and watch a team you hate get its ass handed to them, preferably when they are ranked higher than you are. That is so sweet. No cussing at the TV or being uptight. Just pure entertainment that makes you laugh watching the coach for the team you hate lose his shit on the sidelines. I've got about a half dozen of those teams and my Saturday is complete if I get to see them take a good kick in the balls.

I used the terminology "both teams highly ranked".

Only 3 of those years (2019, 2017, 2012) meet that criteria, and 2019 was a blowout.

Even so, a CFB fan is going to watch their favorite team if in the same time slot.

Unless you're @Thiefery, who's apparently watching 2014 LSU/Florida over his horns.

And said team is likely to be in your own conference.

You are more likely to watch teams that your team will be playing both in and out of conference. For example, Tennessee fans kept up somewhat with Pittsburgh last year along with their SEC East opponents.

Heck I probably watch more SEC East teams than SEC West as well. However, brands do matter. I am going to somewhat be interested in programs like Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, etc. even if they are not highly ranked.

I’m that way about the NFL. My favorite team every week is Jerry Jones’ Cowgirls opponent. I love watching them lose because nearly everyone around here just “LUVS dem ‘Boys”…including my damn golfing buddies.
