The slide rule

Explain the scenario where a sliding rule protects a runner more than the spearing, targeting, and unnecessary roughness rules already in place given that cfb is a down by contact league?

In real time, there’s no way AT ALL that a tackler can alter his tackle if he sees a guy starting to slide if the tackler is already committed to the tackle. This is the same if there is or is not a sliding rule.

Pretty sure the slide rule predates spearing and targeting rules.

But not unnecessary roughness.
The question remains unanswered: what’s the scenario where the slide rule protects the runner where the other rules do not given cfb is a down by contact league?

If the tackler is already committed, it cannot help… and if it’s well before the tackler is committed, then there are already unnecessary roughness rules.

It’s worth the 15 yards IMO
And that is still a choice for a defender to make.

But this had to be addressed. Defense has been eating shit for years on the effort to make the game safer. And the fake slide play clearly highlights that defenses are abiding this rule. You could clearly see each player pull up.

Ryan Clark had a good take on this….basically “I’m never pulling up again”. And, I know, that’s the game in its purest form and should be left alone. A large part of me still agrees with this. But they are never going back to QBs getting slaughtered during the process of giving up on a play. There are only so many guys out there that can sling the ball around.

Agreed. It’s not clear to me that he was faking a slide so much as he saw something and changed his mind.
That’s a possibility I had not considered. He might have just got his feet caught up while his brain was processing other options?

If that is the case now it will be a flag. And I’m fine with that. We already have to deal with helmet to helmet penalties on defenders that clearly were not going for such contact when they committed to the tackle.

Kenny Pickett should be given the death penalty

It's more than 15 yards.

Targeting is an automatic ejection.

He admitted after the game that he'd faked a slide.

It's also not a flag 'yet'.

Just blown dead where the slide began which was always the rule anyway.

NCAA simply clarified it to the refs that there should be no faking slides.

Is that absolute in college? I’ve not followed enough lately. I knew that it could be instant ejection in the NFL, but it’s not absolutely guaranteed. It is guaranteed on the penalty and a fine for sure.

Yes.

Any play declared "targeting" is automatic disqualification.

If it happens in the 2nd half, the player is also disqualified from the 1st half of the next game.

I like this.

This is honestly tough for me because I get why people are upset because if you so much as look at a sliding QB the wrong way it's a flag and everything is already moving so fast that adding in wondering if the QB is faking or not is just another hesitation you give to defenders. On the other, what if a guy does change his mind or is just really bad at juking that it looks like a fake slide and a clueless ref flags it anyway.

It's not a flag. It's just whistled dead and spotted where the slide began.

I was not following this right. This is actually smarter than a penalty and yardage to boot. It’s just down there.

There will be some instances where the QB will swear intent wasn’t to fake. And at times that will be true. But, it will just be the cost of addressing this.
