Sammy, especially his Montrose days.

I am not a big fan of Sammy because I think it's crazy some people think Van Halen with Sammy was better than Van Halen with David Lee Roth.

I prefer them with DLR also, but don't mind Sammy, he's a good singer and they were still very good, albeit different, with him but he's better solo.

That said, neither Sammy nor Dave should be considered metal, despite Sammy having a song called Heavy Metal.

I agree, Van Halen with DLR was hard rock, with Sammy they were pop rock.

100%, which is kind of odd because Sammy solo (before and after) is much harder than his VH era.
 
I think you have to lay that at Eddie's feet.
Absolutely, I know his "direction" was one of the (many) factors in DLR leaving.
