Tipping is getting ridiculous

I'd also be fine with a federal law that says each state must make their min wage a living wage.

There would be a lot of nuance in that as well, though.

Yeah if I ever leave a tip on a takeout order it’s usually a custom tip of $1-2. Fast food I never tip and Starbucks I used to buy have since stopped.

For pizza delivery it’s $4 because they already tack on a delivery fee because reasons.

The car wash example I gave above was the most egregious example I’ve seen to date.
There was a line for a tip when I got pads and rotors last summer......

I know some folks that make a pretty decent living waiting tables or bartending at high end places. When the average four top's bill is $4-500, 20% starts adding up.

I wouldn't want to do it, but like being a realtor, I'm glad the job exists in the event I ever need a safety net.
Yeah. A few years ago we went on a trip to NY with another couple. We went to a high end steak place and for the four of us the tab was almost $800. I picked it up because it was the other couple’s anniversary. The service was so good I tipped well above 20%. I’m guessing the server covered maybe 2 tables an hour at most but if each table north of $500 which is not unreasonable when you factor in drinks, he was easily clearing $1000 a night just in tips. I’m sure a good chunk of that is shared with the runners, the hostess and maybe even the bartenders that’s still quite a payday for a day’s work.

Maybe because of that pesky “supply chain” that caused everything to triple in price over the last four years also hit businesses and not just consumers?
And the decades before that?

It’s my anniversary today. Just saying….

On those cash register tip options, I doubt if the servers get anywhere near the amounts tipped. I usually leave cash on the table instead.

Well congratulations!

It's a circular dynamic. Servers think you aren't going to tip them well and give you lousy service. You're offended and pissed at the lousy service and ignoring of your table, so you either don't tip or leave a fucked up tip or a nasty note on the bill.

I once left my payment covered in ketchup because the waitress never came back for the check and I wanted change. So she got a good tip... but she had to clean the ketchup off of it first.

I had a couple of friends that worked at a swanky nightclub in downtown Chicago and on a slow weekend night, they'd walk with $800 mostly cash. They said good nights were around $1,300 and on a rager, they'd push $2k.

Fucking crazy. I will say though, you have to be on top of shit when it gets to that level. @PackJason's retarded heroes working at Wendy's are going to be lucky to wash dishes at places like this.

Good to know I'm in your head.

That came out of nowhere.

My wife was as server and bartender for years. So I generally tip too much. However...

On take out orders, I tip $1. That's it. No more, no less.

As I said back in July, the idea that you have to select the tip before they perform the service they are being tipped for is ridiculous. That is easily the worst part of the current tipping culture. I refuse to leave anything before getting the product/service I paid for. THEN, I leave a tip if one is warranted.

I will never forget being at a small walk-up/away beer joint in Florida. They didn't serve food. There were no stools to stay and sit around. You ordered, got your beer and then left. When you checked out, the checkout screen had a tip line. It always bothered me a little. If I asked a bunch of questions or asked for a taste of this or that, sure, I'd leave a small tip, but most of the time, i knew what I wanted and left nothing. When I got the stink eye from the tap server, I complained to the manager and never went back--plenty of beer joints down there. Most with better attitudes.

Once, I was WAY out of town (deep south Texas) and due to some bad road conditions ended up with bubbles on two of my tires (run flats). I had to stop at a tire shop and get a couple of new ones. Had to call around to find a shop that had the tires I needed. It took a while, but I finally found one. When I got the new tires put on, the checkout screen had a tip line on it. I insisted on checking my car and the tires first and THEN I left nothing. I know what these places pay their mechanics and techs. Shit, They're making bank. No way was I leaving a tip in those circumstances.

It reminds me of the Scrubs episode when the doctor decided to carry around a tip jar on his rounds. I mean, this is your effin job. You're not being paid pennies on the dollar like a table server. GTFO with this, everyone must tip for every service, crap.

Sounds like some places in Key West.

At this place you could get plastic glasses of beer or even growlers full of beer. But there was nowhere to sit and they didn't want you just hanging around either. Yet, they still wanted tips. It blew my mind.

You have to be a special kind of stupid to come up with that drivel about what I said.

You're a moron.
