I lived in California for 48 years. For most of those years, I never gave a lot of thought to the fires that sprung up from time to time. Lately, it has seemed to get much worse. In the last few years I lived there, it seemed like we were in the path of a fire every year. My mom still lives in Napa and it seems like her house, which was never threatened when I was younger, is in the path nearly every year.

My work moved me out of California a couple of years ago. While there are a number of things I miss, the seemingly-increasing annual fire danger is not one of them.

It's good to hear someone who has been out here far longer than I have having the same impression in terms of how fires have gone from happening from time to time to being a seemingly annual thing. Wishing all the best to your mama up in Napa. It's fucked up there (not like you need me to tell you that).

You moved to the Dallas area I believe. How do like it there? How does cost of living and other things compare?

Back to Kentucky? Although I do have a friend in Big Sky country which is still out west and he loves it

No, I would not buy a second home in Kentucky.
My childhood home is still in the family.
I'm really not sure where I want to buy.
That's the biggest challenge.

We like it a lot. Most things are cheaper and the lack of a state income tax is huge. Some things are more expensive, like property taxes and homeowners insurance. On balance, we have really enjoyed living here. The weather takes a bit to get used to ( the heat, the hail, thunderstorms, etc), but it’s mostly the mercurial nature of it that’s a trip. It can go from 100 degrees and sunny to a major thunderstorm with 60+ MPH winds in less than an hour (this happened last Sunday).

On balance though, we like it and wouldn’t go back anytime soon

Same here, I will not move back to the southeast. If I left the city it would be to move farther north or to the southwest

Are we really gonna have to look at that ugly avatar all the time ?

Amen. But don't put it past California to claim you still need to pay Cal income tax based on your relationship to California i.e., property owned there, frequency of travel into the state, etc.

What a fucking lame human being that guy has to be. Dude posts that shit on multiple sports websites everyday only to have about two or three people even open the thread each day. Then posts pretty much nothing else at all.
