An interesting name came up re: the USC coaching search...Mike Tomlin.

According to Carson Palmer, he has been discussed.

I seriously doubt that USC gets him or that he even has any interest. It's just good to see that the AD is thinking big instead of just looking for someone with "USC ties" like Pat Haden or just hiring the interim to not have to do the work of a real search like Swann.

His name got thrown around for LSU. That makes me think he is either angling for a contract extension or just wants out of Pittsburg.

I could see him going to the Raiders before I saw him going to the college ranks.

Yeah, LSU and the Raiders definitely means that USC isn't the only ''name'' out there looking for a coach anymore. I agree with Carson Palmer when he says that they have the advantage because they fired their coach first and got a head start on their search...but having LSU and the Raiders in the mix definitely creates serious competition and likely increases what they'll have to pay to get the level of coach they want.

The more I read the more I like Mel Tucker for the LSU job or Mark Stoops.

I just see those two jobs as polar opposites in the candidate needed. For example, I think Chip Kelly made the right move choosing UCLA over Florida as it just wouldn't have been a fit. Mark Stoops does not work in LA but he definitely works in Baton Rouge.

Yeah, Stoops is likely a more natural fit with LSU. With USC, he'd be fine as long as the team met expectations. But folks would turn on him faster than they would on someone who truly fit.

LSU will turn on him after 3 seasons no matter what he does. as we are seeing now.

UCLA at Utah (-6.5)
Washington State at Arizona State (-15)
Oregon State (-1.5) at California
Arizona at USC (-21)
Colorado at Oregon (-24)
Washington at Stanford (-2.5)

lol

7 weeks in and the USC coaching search rumors are getting wilder.

Tomlin gets mentioned yesterday. Then this morning Dan Patrick said he got an e-mail from a source that said..."The USC job is considered to be a better job than several NFL jobs and that teams with weak ownership could lose their coach." He says the e-mail mentioned Cowboys OC Kellen Moore and Cowboys DC Dan Quinn. He apparently also mentioned Kliff Kingsbury (which would be hilarious considering he was hired by USC once already).

What's weird with those mentions is that both the Cowboys and Cardinals are in first place in their divisions.

Coach GQ didn't fare too well in college at Texas Tech as compared to what he's had with the Cardinals. Question is did that have more to do with the fact that he was at Texas Tech than his coaching ability? Would his college coaching fare better at USC than it did at Tech?

James Franklin lookin' to get P.A.I.D.

From what I've read, his new agent is said to be powerful and aggressive. He'll leverage LSU and USC against each other and leverage them against Penn St.

Somebody is going to be writing a big check.

Does LSU or USC really want him that bad? I'm not a fan of his so if I'm Penn State I say let him go. But, what the hell do I know. I'm just a cantankerous old man.

Hope it's not USC writing that BIG check. Not sure he would fit into the USC (SoCal) environment. But it IS a HC crapshoot out there right now, so it will be interesting how things "pan out"... :noidea:

He's probably the best name out there that looks to be attainable. Some are saying Fickell, but I don't think SC would take a gamble on a G5 coach. Though flawed, Franklin has shown improvement at the schools he's made stops at.

I'd think he is 90% going there, he just hired Sexton

Franklin is notorious for using job openings as leverage for bigger contracts. It will be interesting to see if Penn State finally let’s him walk if LSU or USC offer him 8-10M a year

He's not at the top of my wishlist, but I wouldn't be upset if they hired him. He's a good "CEO" and that's something needed at USC. When Pete Carroll was at USC, a big part of the reason he was so successful was because he hired very good assistant coaches and let them do their jobs while he dealt with everything else. If an assistant wasn't getting the job done, Pete had no problem moving on from him.

From what I've read and heard, Franklin is a lot like that.

From what I've heard, most seem to think he'd be a good fit. Apparently, he's good at dealing with boosters, etc.

Yeah, Franklin is said to be the frontrunner, but Fickell remains in the running (despite him saying he's a "midwest guy") because Bohn hired him at Cincy.

Considering he has that G5 ranked 2nd in the country...USC better be willing to take that gamble.

It's funny, a lot of folks have Franklin all but hired at USC and USC has been very quiet re: their search...in fact, Carson Palmer may have gotten himself on the naughty list with letting it slip that Tomlin had been discussed. He seemed surprised that Dan Patrick hadn't heard that. lol

I remember Tomlin and John Harbaugh name pop up for the Texas job too.. back in 2016 and in 2020.

I wouldn't be mad at all if TOmlin left, I hate what he's done in Pittsburgh over the past 7 or so seasons

Well, I guess Tomlin is removing his name from consideration.

He was asked about the USC job and, sounding almost insulted, basically said..."I have one of the greatest jobs in the world. Why would I want to go coach college football?". He also said "This is the only time I'm addressing this" "there isn't a paycheck big enough" and "Never say never...never".

lol
