Tom Osborne retired at 60

I didn't say that.

Can you read?
I read what you wrote in response to what I wrote.

Also, if Michigan didn’t go to the Rose Bowl, they probably would have been sued and face possible sanctions by the NCAA. They were contractually obligated.

They didn't have to be.

They WANTED to be.

The Big 10 did NOT want to have to play the best available in event of a possible national championship team. Odds were a lot better to get a lesser opponent in the Rose Bowl.
This isn't about the Big 10 which Nebraska was begging to join.

It was certainly about the Big 10 not wanting to join the Bowl Coalition or Alliance. Of course Michigan had a lot of influence in those decisions.

Nebraska was not begging to join the Big 10 in 1994 or 1997.

This explains everything

The inaccuracies are numerous ... No one in Michigan is worried about 1997.

If we turn back the hands of time ...

One vote helped shape Huskers' split championship

Question re: Phil Fulmer and the 1997 Vote | mgoblog

It would have been excellent to see both teams play each other, but that is not possible. I shall not dwell in the past. Looking forward to the upcoming season and hoping that we can make it to the playoffs again. A tip of the cap to TCU and Georgia.

Just what we need -- an argument about a season 25+ years ago about a game that was never played. Who cares. Nebraska has had plenty of chances to show not only Michigan, but the B1G, as a whole, how dominant they are. I think we can all agree, Nebraska sold out their football program for $$$$$.

The better discussion would be -- how long before we hear how it is Matt Rhule's fault Nebraska is a middle of the road team in the weak division of the B1G? I say it will be 3 years, tops. The faster Nebraska faithful accept their new reality, that playing in the middle of nowhere, with no national rival and no in state talent makes them essentially, another Iowa or Wisconsin. They will be a solid B1G West team who will continue to be fodder for the B1G East champ in Indy and being nationally relevant is never happening, unless they get a blank check from Warren Buffett to buy entire recruiting classes for multiple years.

All I know is that "My Eye Test" that year said Nebraska hands down, and no other team was even close.

Could your "Eye Test" be skewed by a 69-7 beat down that Nebraska gave you?

Defense wins titles ... Michigan was the #1 Defense in 1997 giving up 9.5 points per game. Nebraska 16.5.

Michigan played 4 top 10 teams (Colorado, Penn State, ohio state and Washington State) and 7 (add Iowa, Michigan State and Wisconsin) ranked teams. Nebraska played 2 top 10 teams (Washington and Tennessee) and 4 (add Kansas State and Texas A&M).

Nebraska had one game that went into overtime with an unranked Missouri (45-38). Michigan won all their games in regulation.

Nebraska had a reputation for running up the score, and Michigan had a reputation for running out the clock.

The 1997 Michigan Wolverines had the 14th Best Defense according to ESPN. The 1997 Nebraska doesn't rank. Michigan had on team score more than 16 points in them (Iowa - 24 points).
Ranking the 50 best defenses in college football history

I don't want to take anything against Nebraska, just trying to defend Michigan.

This thread is supposed to be about Tom Osborne ... a well deserving Hall of Fame Coach

Nice try, but Colorado dropped out of the polls in Week 8 and finished (5-6) unranked.

Neither Penn St (16th) or Ohio St (12th) finished in the Top 10.

Iowa dropped out of the polls in Week 13 and finished (7-5) unranked.
Michigan State dropped out of the polls in Week 11 and finished (7-5) unranked.
Wisconsin dropped out of the polls after Week 1, got back in in Week 8 at 24th, dropped back out in Week 9, got back in in Week 12 at 24th, dropped back out in Week 14, and finished (8-5) unranked.

Missouri was actually ranked in the final AP poll.

Two mid-season road games vs conf opps and two early season home games vs non-conf opps.

Yeah, that doesn’t really mean a whole lot. What else ya got?

Nebby had two games decided by a td or less. UM had four.

Gonna have to do better than that.

Overruled.

Nebby had already been the higher ranked team for the first 2/3 of the season anyway.

Several pollsters only watched UM’s narrow escape vs WSU and didn’t even bother watching the Nebby-Tenny game.

Just handed the #1 spot to UM, gift-wrapped and all.

Nebby got a legitimate nat’l title. UM got one hell of a xmas gift.
UM had 0 games decided by a kicked pass to a receiver. Case closed.

You mean the 5-6, unranked Colorado who had the ball at the end of the 4th quarter with a chance to beat Nebraska before falling 27-24? The same Colorado that lost 27-3 to Michigan. That Colorado?

In before the excuses start rolling in about why Colorado almost beat Nebraska and Michigan dominated them. Oh yeah -- same goes for Baylor.

Cue the excuses in 3.2.1..............GOOOOOOO

It should state -- Michigan had 0 games decided by a kicked pass to a receiver on the final play of regulation to force OT for the chance to beat a 5 loss Missouri team. Michigan also didn't need to stop a late 4th quarter drive in their territory against 6 loss Colorado to sneak out with a 27-24 win.

Colorado and Baylor were conference opponents and Nebraska played them both on the road.

Michigan played both of them in Ann Arbor.
