Too bad.

I was so looking forward to him becoming a Blue Devil just so when he got a rebound I could say, "There's another Boogie Board".

Yeah, pretty underwhelming. He was a zero star prospect out of high school, had to go the JuCo route and then avg 12 ppg at UNH, an awful team, and missed this last season with injury. Our roster is going to look so bad. I don't have much hope with the remaining 4/5 scholarships, depending on what the incoming recruits do. It's for real looking like our starting backcourt could be guys that played at William & Mary and Lafayette. Lmao. Fucking brutal.
He's grad transfer so only one year of eligibility, just a warm body to fill roster and not tie down scholarship

We'll be bad next year, but I do think the worst thing Ben could do is fill roster with 4 year guys that are scholarship reaches. Get some short term bodies, build your roster and team, but we're in for another rebuild here in MN.

With luck by year 3 we can see results. I'm aware of how tiring it is to hear patience, but this was inevitable.

Technically he gets 2 because of the Covid year. But yeah you are right, adding these mid majors isnt a huge deal if they are not locked in long term.

Next year is gonna be absolutely painful though.

I don't think the school is obligated to give him another year, but I'm not 100% sure

Yeah, I definitely agree with that. Pitino offered a bunch of guys that simply weren't good enough. Having to put up with 4 years of Konate, Diedhiou, and Hurt(he was decent) was pretty brutal. Not to mention offering guys like Ahmad Gilbert, Josh Martin, Greenlee etc.

We are going to be awful this upcoming season, but we'll know pretty quickly how this will turn out with how he does with the 2022 class. If he strikes out with those guys, we'll be looking for a new coach after 2025.

I worry many gopher fans will be too quick to judge Ben, I do think he'll need 4-5 years to prove himself, I feel that with all coaches though and even after 4 years I'm not expecting B1G titles, but growth, a tourney run, and encouragement we can be a top 4 b1g team

Here is the issue. And why the judgment will come quickly. We basically chose the great unknown on the promises that this unknown could at least keep talent home.

We are already leeching onto the "home recruiting" too much for my liking. Like seriously, if you see a better player in Mississippi, go try and get him.

But the issue comes in, where if it plays out like Eric says and he completely strikes out in 2022. Well then we are still gonna be bad for a few years forsure, and thats without having any damn clue if this guy can even coach. Everything about this hire is about hitting the in state ground hard immediately.

Xavier didn't exactly do anything crazy in his couple years as an assistant....recruiting or on the court.

When you completely build from scratch(like this here) its gonna take 2-3 years minimum after your first class simply because you gotta let those guys get developed into the program. So whiffing again next year will set it back even further. And it could be years before we even know if this guy can coach his way outta a paper bag.

Next years team will be so bad, they only take away will be if they somehow win like 8 big 10 games, then maybe hes legit. Other than that, we can't tell anything.

i understand that, I do, but he's not going to be fired after 1-2 years and he's going to struggle, I think any coach would.

I wanted Craig Smith but I'm not the AD

I agree MN is too obsessed with recruiting MN kids. And lets be honest, Ben will need to do better with players like Race Thompson/Ruevers/Garcia etc, I do expect MN will continue to strikeout with the Suggs/Holmgren level recruits

Oh yeah he won't be gone after 2 years. But the idea is the possibility that if 2022 recruiting is a complete dude, by 2025 he could be gone.

And yeah, we might get the really high end guys occaisionally but thats not what we have to have. Where Pitino failed is all the quality 3 and 4 stars in state.

McKinley Wright was made second fiddle which was simply unacceptable. Hands down the worst one. John being Wrights teammate was basically passed over as well. Anim completely ignored. Obviously all the dbags who went to wisconsin shoulda been had.

Thats where the improvement has to be had. Wisconsin and Marquette are programs that in most cases will beat out the Gophers for Non Minnesota kids. But they absolutely should not be doing laps around the minnesota talent pool and gobbling up the best of the non blue blood kids.

I think after the 2025 season would be the earliest to think about firing him based on the level of success or lack there of he's having. Hell I'm not even expecting a tournament appearance until 2024 at the earliest, assuming he gets some of the MN kids in 2022. The ideal trajectory IMO would be:

2021-2022: Awful team, probably worst in the B1G, 6-8 win team
2022-2023: Land some of those MN kids, sprinkle in some transfers, maybe make the NIT
2023-2024- Bubble team/NIT appearance
2024-2025- Top 25 team, top 6 finish in the B1G.

If we don't see any type of progress after 2025, I think it's time to make a move at that point.

That was my issue with Pitino his whole tenure at Minnesota. Not so much missing out on Trent Jr, Jones, Suggs, Hurt and those upper echelon guys, but rather missing out on really quality players a notch below them with the likes of Reid Travis, JP Macura, Jericho Sims, Race Thompson, Theo John, McKinley Wright, Zeke Nnaji, Tyrell Terry and that doesn't even include the Wisconsin guys.

You throw all those guys(minus Macura and Travis b/c of age) on a team, that's a hell of a team, and a program that can sustain success.

I'm beginning to think that "rebuilding" will be an annual event at a lot of schools from now own. One and dones created a small annual rebuild at some schools that were fortunate enough to land those guys. It may become rare to have a team together for a longer period of time nowadays. But, what the hell do I know.
