UNLV qb quits over NIL dispute

The QB of Thompson High School, a 10th grader, in Alabaster, AL has been offered 7 figures to transfer to Georgia to play high school ball. (note Georgia is not mentioned in the article below but that was the rumor and the reason the GHAS banned NIL collectives)

If true that's retarded.
If true the kid's retarded for not taking it.
If true the people putting up the money are retarded.
One day I have a hell of a story to tell about something like this and it's not just high school football that has these types of shenanigans going on. Hit me up in 2030 and I'll spill the beans.

but I can see why he was being naive a bit.
So then you're agreeing with exactly I just said...the kid was an idiot to just expect someone would pay him 100k with nothing written down.

I'm not saying the school or NIL collective isn't to blame either. Like I've said already, the system is fucked. And the kid isn't blameless in this.

I mean they were undefeated but was it bc of him anyway?

Dude was completing 44% of his passes and was throwing for a bit over 100 ypg. He did have the dual-threat ability. Either way it sucks for UNLV but they did it to themselves.
It’s not dual-threat when you can’t complete a forward pass. He’s basically any of those QB’s GT ran out there under Paul Johnson

"I think that one million could turn into 100 million one day,"

Kid and his father are already banking on him being drafted high and getting a big contract as a QB in the NFL. WTF. So much shit can happen in that time. Injuries, lack of progression, failure, etc. Idiot if true.

Not sure how you got to the conclusion I'm claiming that, but he's played in 3 games now so he has to make the decision to redshirt right now. If he plays saturday then he has zero wiggle room.
Actually you can play in 4 but that’s what I thought, so he does have a redshirt year. He’s angling, we will see.

I know he can play in 4, that's why I said if he plays Saturday he has zero wiggle room. Right now he can threaten to sit but still suit up, but once he plays that 4th he has to shit or get off the pot.

The rumors I'm hearing is that this kid hired an agent after the Kansas win and the agent told him he could get $300k from the school. The school told him no and now he's walking. That changes my view if true, but who knows at this point. UNLV has shown they aren't above going public with what is going on so I'll just watch it all play out.

Also a rumor that he got a "better offer" and asked UNLV to match it but they refused. Could be part of the same scenario.

And also of coaches looking to ride the coattails of a player to a better job. If you can get that kid to come play for you then you can tell colleges that the kid does what you tell him and if the school wants him then they need to create a nice paying job for the coach.

Yup. That "offer" may not be real but just the agent saying that is what the kid could get on the open market. But after this stunt the market is a lot more narrow. His stats plus his willingness to just quit means there won't be a lot of FBS schools interested in his services.

Facts that we have so far:
- Team is 3-0
- Defense is top 10 in multiple categories (YPP, Yards per drive, pts per drive)
- Offense is 104th in Yards per play
- QB is under 50% competition percentage
- QB is the one leaving for a better opportunity? :headscratch:

I wouldn’t dismiss it out of hand.

transfer where? dude played 4 years at holy cross. he gonna play the college circuit until he's 40?

Seems more common these days. With NIL and little to no pro prospect, why not keep that gravy train running

One of the guys who started that rumor is a journalist who is actually listed as the PR contact for the school. Like has been mentioned, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle of the two parties. And we'll likely never know the actual truth.

But he can't transfer midseason, so why ruin his name with this stunt to play for another school next year?
Never said he was savvy. This is the only way to preserve his eligibility but it’s a bad look.

We are headed to direct pay
Agreed. Schools didn’t want to make them “employees” but that might be the only way to reign this crap in, unless Congress gets involved but good luck getting politicians especially in SEC land to do anything about this. The institutionalized bag men can be a boon.
