USC and UCLA planning to leave for B10 by 2024!

I get SC but what benefit does UCLA get? UCLA is a public school in California that values non revenue sports, does the B1G even really have non revenue sports that makes sense to fly that far out? UCLA bitches about their trips to Pullman in November because it is too cold but they are willing to go to Indiana in November? I get SC and it would’ve made sense for Stanford but I don’t get UCLA unless the B1G is hoping this 2 year run in basketball for UCLA is anything other than a fluke.

They get $$$$ and they are $ 100 Million in debt apparently.

I would think SC alone would get ya the LA market and the brand is a bombshell so why from the BIG standpoint get UCLA other than maybe the rival game and hoping to drum up more interest in California where there are so many more options of activities to occupy your time:noidea:? Basketball really has very very little if anything to do with these moves so I just don’t see the value of UCLA I mean why not Washington or Oregon now for the new market/footprint and come back to UCLA later?

They may have done it just to keep the SEC from ever getting in that market, as I say that it makes the most sense actually.

That brings up another good point, the B1G (if their wish is to go to 20+) should probably grab the rest of the teams being discussed on the west coast (Washington, Oregon, Stanford) if nothing else to minimize travel even a bit, especially for the Olympic sports. I get the want for UNC but I’m not really sure why the B1G is so high on UVA? Yes they are a tremendous academic institution but the Market they are by the B1G already has and their football is meh. Doing this for the basketball team? Grab Kansas who is actually in the B1G foot print already.

Washington I would semi understand but even then UW doesn’t bring in the Seattle market. There are enough people in LA for a SC move to bring in the market. But just from a logistical it doesn’t make sense for a public school like UCLA. SC, sure because they are private. But I think UCLA is going to essentially be the West Virginia to the Big 12 now where it is a nice payday but won’t pay dividends for the conference much like Rutgers.

But you just kind of answered your question. UVA’s “market” is the exact same as what UW/Oregon/Stanford would bring in.

UVA’s market is already owned by the B1G with Maryland. The B1G doesn’t own the PORTLAND, SEATTLE, OR SAN FRAN market.

Control. Corporate warfare often overspends. Fox vs ESPN; BIG vs SEC. I don't think equal payouts is something that'll last forever either. Eventually the bigger schools will have enough leverage to bend this in their favor when there are no longer viable conferences to pillage. People will say it's about usurping the NCAA, but that's only half true, imo. Schools like Texas, Ohio State, USC, etc want more money, and to keep more of it for themselves. That's it, that's the game.

That's good if you're UVA and other relatively middling programs because you got a great shot at landing in the BIG/SEC longterm in the mega conference model we seem to be heading towards. Just a matter of when. The gravy train Purdue is enjoying now is probably not the same level, relatively, 10 years from now.

The real question is what happens to schools like Duke.

UCLA is a bonafide blue blood in basketball. B1G got 2 blue bloods for the main 2 college sports.

These moves have nothing to do with basketball though, if school ____ has a good basketball program then great, just gravy on the biscuit but Football and market drive this bus.

Money for that conference from the networks by cornering the LA market. Never forget these moves are controlled by networks and their money at the end of the day, not conference commissioners, the schools/conferences sign off on em because of the money but networks are making the call on who’s in or out.

If the decision would have been basketball only and no other factor then Zona would have been in play. UCLA is more than good enough in football, blue blood in hoops, and has strong academics.

I'm sure USC wants all 4 Cali schools to go with them. UCLA was the top of those 3.
