VT /Fuente part ways

Seems like firing coaches well before the season is over is now the new thing. Teams aren't waiting until after the last game like they used to, coaches are dropping like flies mid-season. We have multiple weeks left of the regular season and multiple teams have already let go of their head coaches

USC
LSU
Washington
TCU
Wash St
VT

Gators need to hurry up and make a vacancy

So, what went wrong at VT ??
Fuente seemed to be the perfect hire at the time, and was doing good things at Memphis.

Yeah...that seems to be the trend. Hell, Texas Tech already fired their coach and hired the next one. I guess it makes more sense with the early signing day. Can't afford to keep a lame duck coach for an extra month or two.

Recruiting and development became that of a dumpster fire. Also qb play after Jerod Evans (2016) went to shit and he was supposed to be a "qb whisperer" of a coach. Laughable at best.

Who do you think VT's top targets will be?

Me thinks we'll see an increase in the number of firings. Several got a pass last year because of COVID so they stacked up a little. Add this year's and it will be a larger number. But what the hell do I know.

Will school's go the experienced retread route? Or will they hire an up and comer without HC experience?

See, this is how bad Duke Football has become. Beat Duke by 31 and still get fired.

At least Duke Football didn't lose to Kansas...

If I'm VT my list consist of:

1. Fickle - He maybe getting wrapped up by someone else though
2. Matt Campbell - He needs to make a move this year if he is going to do it
3. Mark Stoops - Not sure you could get him and no idea what his buyout is but he has proven himself
4. Billy Napier - I understand TT is high on him so I wouldn't sit around if this is your guy
5. Kendal Briles - Great OC, knows the ACC from his time at FSU and the kid can recruit and upgrade existing talent

The above 5 are solid and honestly, Briles might be too low on the list because what he has done at Arkansas with Franks and Jefferson has been just short of amazing. Someone get this kid out of the league.

From what I am reading:

Attainable:
- Napier
- Clawson
- Chadwell
- Freeze

Nice to have but not attainable IMO:
- Fickle
- Stoops

Not ready / jury is still out:
- Shane Beamer
Here is the thing on Fickle. He needs to make a move this year because going to a new league and losing Ridder (who has been a massive piece of his success) is going to make the Cincy job so much harder. You aren’t going to get him over USC or LSU but who knows the direction they are going. VT is perfect part of the country for Fickle and it’s a P5 job with a ton of upside. VT is not a top 10 job buts it’s top 25 and has more stability than a lot of the top 10s.

Stoops is probably close to peaking at KY because how far can they really take the program with Tenn getting better? The ACC is ripe for someone to step up and be a consistent power.

Avoid Freeze like the plague.
Beamer would be bad for both parties IMO.

Love that Tuesday morning news dump

On Cincy the one good thing that can help is our AD came from that program. My personal pick out of all of those coaches would be Fickle. I think he could make an instant impact at VT.
