we are about a year away from a forced Roy Williams retirement

so who is everyone's pick to replace Roy at UNC

UNC has a history of looking at the family for their HC choices. The last time UNC hired a coach that didn't have a prior connection to UNC was in 1952.

problem is that the correct UNC family coaching tree fucking sucks. When Dean retired in 1997, there was Roy, George Karl, Larry Brown and long-time assistant Gut. In 2021, there's nobody. There's Wes Miller @ UNCG, but UNCG to UNC is such a big step up that it's comical and shouldn't be worth entertaining.

tbh, i would go after Nate Oats hard

I endorse Nate Oats.

Roy retires at the end of 2023, Steve Robinson is what Guthridge was for a couple seasons, Wes Miller is hired in 2027 in between him being somewhere else and having good success.

Gut took over a stacked UNC roster, that is the only reason why he lasted three seasons.

Steve Robinson has already tried his hand in ACC basketball and he failed miserably. Robinson wouldn't cut the mustard, especially since UNC has been relatively down since 2018.

If UNC doesn't go after a big name, Bubba Cunningham should be fired. Matt Doherty 2.0 should be avoided at all costs.

From what I have heard, Miller wants to elevate UNCG to CAA-status before he moves on to a bigger job. tbh, I'm getting the impression that it is big four or bust for Miller.

Oh yeah I agree Guthridge took over a loaded roster. I'm just thinking they'll try to keep it with someone with unc ties. And right now there isn't a good option.

I hope you are right. It'll make Forbes job that much easier.

I do think Miller would be capable of making that jump. I do think he's really good. But there still comes with it some unknowns.

Not happening but this would be hilarious chaos

Richard pitino. Figures things out as a lobo

What about Hubert Davis?

Honestly, Carolina is like UK and Kansas, you just have to make sure the ship doesn't sink.

Even more so than Duke I'd say just because Duke's success is so tied to 1 man. Caroline, UK, KU have had success under a slew of guys.

I also think Roy has a little more rope than that. Only 4 years removed from a championship, and one of his 'bad years' was really wiped by COVID.

this isn't true. K's predecessor took them to the FF and won a pair of ACC titles, despite only being there for seven years. Their coach in the 60s, Vic Bubas, is a member of the CBB HOF and took them to 3 FFs.

fwiw, K's ACC winning % is second in Duke history, behind Bubas.

If we're being honest, Duke has always has pretty damn good basketball dating back to the 1930s. The only period where they were down from the early 70s until 1977ish.

UNC, UK and Duke are probably the three best jobs in college basketball.

Is this like Michigan Football needing a "Michigan Man" as head coach???

Michigan football nattys in my mom's lifetime: 0* (some count 1997 for some weird reason)
UNC basketball nattys in my mom's lifetime: 6 (1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009, 2017)

so yeah, i guess it's the same thing, if UNC hoops sucked ass

Looks like it's worked out then.
Was just wondering if they are locked into it this time around.
