I haven't heard a marching band in over a year thanks to COVID, so yeah, you don't hear about them anymore either.
Why are there no more bands?

There is nothing better than a marching band in my opinion.

I love the Stones, but I have also heard every song of theirs countless times.
I grew up on the oldies and love em dearly, but seldom listen to it intentionally anymore.
Too much stuff out there that I haven't heard a million times.
I grew up too on the oldies, but not as it was happening live, I grew up on it because that was what my parents listened to. But still to this day, it's what I prefer and will listen to over and over. It smashes anything that is produced and put out today. Sure there are some songs I hear today that come out and it's good, but when it comes down to it, if I had to make an 8 hour drive, I'm listening to the classic rock station as opposed to anything else.

I haven't listened to the radio in 20 years, save fer a bit of satellite radio. If I'm on an 8 hour drive, I will choose from my own collection every time. It's right there on my phone. Which currently includes some classics...exile on main st, some Who, etc.
The whole notion that rock is dead, is just old man rhetoric tho. As stated earlier, every era has an underground scene that's generally as good or better than the radio stuff anyway.
That's the thing though, in today's music, being better than the radio isn't hard at all.

It’s so much a thing, it’s just they aren’t really trying to “make it” now, because that isn’t really a thing. Find a local music scene if you want that, support it, love it.

Usually, throughout my life, the bands I loved ended up becoming "main stream."
Bands like Tool and Pantera and Alice in Chains. They were all under the radar for a long time, but became "main stream."
There are still a lot of great bands out there, it's just that albums aren't marketable anymore. We live in a world of hit-downloads. It's sad.
I hate to admit it, but Lars Ulrich was right ... the advent of song sharing destroyed the creation of great albums.
Well I wasn't around during the 60s and 70s, so maybe bands like the Rolling Stones, CCR, etc were also only found somehow someway in the underground scene. I guess because I grew up listening to them I always just imagined they were on the radio even back in the day. Was this not the case? Did you have to search for their albums in stores and just listen to them on record? Find out where they were playing and go see them live?
Again, I just assumed they were on the radio too back in the day just like they are today. And I don't have time to sit around and search for underground music bands, who does?

They were on the radio and in the main stream, the point is it’s just different now. Times changed. Probably a mix of bands don’t need record labels to get themselves out there, and bands that aren’t established with a world wide audience are more of a risk for record labels keeps it more out of the main stream than in the past.
I don’t know what to tell you, there’s still great music to be found, it’s more necessary to support it than ever if you like it, but if you can’t be troubled to do that, it’s clearly not that important to you beyond making a hoopla thread about it.
Yeah sorry, searching, finding and supporting a band is the least of my worries right now. If a band is struggling to make it big time, then maybe do something worth note to get you up there. Bands in the 70s spoke out about BS that was going on. Bands need to make a name for themselves if they feel the need. You read about some of these popular bands of the 60s and 70s on the verge of failing, but then they got that one huge hit. Now with social media and all you'd think now would be even easier for some of these musicians to make a label for themselves.
So my apologies to any band that is just making music and putting it on Apple to be downloaded for $1.29 and I never hear about them. Seems like their efforts to make it big time are as much of an effort as me trying to go find their music.

MTV doesn’t play music videos anymore. And you’re happy seeing Brittany Spears in Vegas while bitching about there being no more rock bands.
You want good music? Download Pandora and select the Iron Maiden channel 
On a side note, The Stones was probably the best concert I've ever seen. Definitely Top 3.

There is a lot of good stuff out there, but you have to look for it. Thankfully it's not as hard now as it used to be. Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music etc all have a ton of categories and stuff, and the cool thing is if you find something you like, it usually has associated or similar artists so it's easy to get down a rabbit hole of music.
Top 40/mainstream has ALWAYS been lame. Remember, in the "good old days", bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest etc in the 70's were rarely on radio, yet you had crap like "Afternoon Delight" all over the airwaves. Hell look at Iron Maiden, they've put out like 20 albums, and the new stuff is just as good as the old stuff, they've sold out every show since the early 80s, have 100's of millions of fans, and I don't think I've ever heard them on the radio (other than satellite radio with a metal channel).
Point is, back then, it was word of mouth, looking at magazines and actually going to record stores, etc just to find new bands, now it takes seconds to find them.
