If that was the case.. you would have thought the BiG wouldn't have passed on them? Instead of passing them up for Nebraska?

Well don't forget Nebraska was already a B1G member before Mizzou even tried leaving the Big 12, so they didn't really pass on them for Nebraska. Publicly the league said they didn't want to go beyond 12. Was that the actual reason or did they just straight not want them, I'm not sure, but I do wonder if the B1G at the time knew they'd jump to 14 just a couple years later would they have made an offer.
I do, however, know TV markets was a big reason for the SEC taking them.
I still think it's amazing that Georgia Tech, who's not long after became so synonymous with the triple option, had Calvin Johnson play for them with a glorified running back throwing him the ball.
I don't think they ran the triple option when he was there but when I think of GT I still think of that.

no, they really did pass on Mizzu. Hell Mizzu was the first school in the Big12 to reach out to another conference (BiG). Then when it became public, NU and BiG talked and they got the invite.
SEC needed someone to pair up with aggy.. and to their credit Mizzu was the best available. And they have had success in the SEC but they feel like they belong in the BiG still.

Calvin Johnson played under Chan Gailey, but his QBs were terrible. Demaryius Thomas was recruited by Gailey, but stayed for the triple option under Paul Johnson
Fair enough, I honestly don't remember that much of what happened off-hand other than I thought Mizzou didn't try moving until mid-2011.

Calvin Johnson played for Chan and his last year in Atlanta was 2006. Paul Johnson's first year was in 2008.
Reggie Ball wasn't really a glorified RB. He was just a shitty QB. He also had a lot of hype coming in and he never delivered on it. His most infamous play was throwing the ball away on 4th down with the game on the line against UGA. Also, Ball caught a ton of shit for going 0-4 against the Dawgs. The rivalry was still competitive for the most part at that time, so a starting QB going 0-4 in the series was a pretty big deal. It was really just a sign of things to come.
Thomas is actually who I was thinking of as it being crazy that a triple option team could produce an eventual All-Pro, receiver.

I’m sure he would have left of transferring was as easy then as it is now. I think Thomas was the last receiver from Tech to do anything in the NFL. Don’t think Ricky Jeune ever got beyond a practice squad

Darren Waller played wr there as well. Obviously plays TE now. Stephen Hill was drafted by Jets but only played a couple years and was garbage.

If Missouri were to jump ship the schools making inquiries to join would be through the roof.
The best part would be Texas would step up and try to manipulate who they wanted and we would get to laugh at them. My bet would be the entire orphan 8, FSU and Clemson would be the first to inquire and I wouldn't be surprised in VT or NC State did as well.
Among that group I think VT is the no brainer as the last two states the SEC really would like a presence in would be Virginia and North Carolina. Getting a NC team would be so political I don't think it would happen but the move would be really good for VT. Any ACC school comes with a huge obstacle though in that their TV rights are tied up until 2036 so it might make that impossible.
I just don't see the B1G even being interested in Missouri.

They are an AAU school and that is a big deal to the B1G. I’ve been told that given the choice, the B1G would take GT over UGA because of the AAU deal

You don’t need Monken. GT is in Atlanta. One of the most talent rich areas of the country. They needed to go back to a style that could bring some of that talent to them. Collins probably wasn’t the right guy, but the move to a pro style attack was absolutely the right call. Chan Gailey proved you can get big time athletes at Tech. Get a coach that can recruit at least at Gailey’s level but is a bit better with the X’s and O’s.

Temple made out like bandits. GT had to pay Collins’ buyout, then they hired Manny Diaz, who then got hired to replace Richt at Miami before Manny got off the plane in Philly and Miami had to pay Manny’s buyout. Of course, they didn’t do shit with it, but they got paid over 10 million for two coaches that are on the hot seat at their current programs now
