Finally got caught up on all the movie releases from 2021 that I wanted to watch. Was originally going to do top 10 but as I filled it out there were movies just making it for the sake of filling out a top 10 list and not necessarily movies that I enjoyed. So I cut it down to top 5.

Top 5 of 2021
1. Licorice Pizza
2. The Last Duel
3. Dune
4. The French Dispatch
5. The Green Knight

Worst movie of 2021
The Tragedy of Macbeth - this was the last movie I was waiting to watch from 2021. Very beautifully shot but that is it. Everything else about the movie is terrible. It was a real struggle to get through.

I'll have to think over my own list.

But your top two are among my top for most overrated and then most underrated.

Licorice Pizza was so blahh, the plot obviously a joke knowing how heated people would be if the genders were reversed. Just wasting much too it. Cooper was hilarious in his 3 minutes though.

Last Duel I think is really underrated. I had zero expectations. Love the actors involved not usually a huge fan of the setting. Ending up really liking the movie and loved the 3 view point story.

Nice list. I went with:

1. Belfast
2. Licorice Pizza
3. Spider-Man: No Way Home
4. The French Dispatch
5. Dirtpipe Milkshakes 16: Thicc Babez’ Revenge

My worst movie of 2021 was Matrix Resurrections. What pretentious, self-serving crap. Even a straight money grab sequel would’ve been better than this meandering nonsense with only two returning actors and a pile of fakey inside jokes that fail to land.

I’ve been eyeballing The Tragedy of Macbeth….but just haven’t watched it yet. But, I’ve been very intrigued.

Could you give a bit more from your take that made it terrible and tough to get through?

You seem to be forgetting granny Jada

Meh

In 2021 the best writing was on TV shows as Yellowstone, Ted Lasso, Shadow and Bone and the Witcher were more entertaining.

The Last Duel closed well but you had to watch three different versions of the same shit that really didn’t change to get there.

Being perfectly honest, I didn't really find anything to be that good this year. I have not seen everything or everything that I actually want to see, but from what I have, I have not been impressed.

To name one that I haven't seen mentioned yet, No Time To Die was pretty good. I wouldn't say great, but I wouldn't call The Last Duel, Spider-Man: No Way Home or The Green Knight great either.

It's all of that old English Shakespeare dialog. I just could not stand it, which is a shame because visually it is a very impressive movie.

If you're into that sort of thing though you'd like it. Just was not for me.

I loved everything about Licorice Pizza. The writing, the acting, the direction and the music selection. A major return to form for Paul Thomas Anderson for me who was coming off, in my mind, two of his worst movies in Phantom Thread and Inherent Vice.

Ah. Yeah. I love many of Shakespeare’s stories….but I just can’t take the dialog itself long as well. Totally get it.

Thanks for the feedback and calibration on what to expect with this!

Just watched Last Night in Soho and that might take the crown for worst movie from 2021 that I've seen.

Yeah, I am kinda shocked by this. It got a 75% critic score and a 90% audience score... this was an average to subpar thriller. Things just happened and nothin was really explained. At first, I thought it was going to be an insight into mental illness and rope it altogether in such a way, similar to Take Shelter (which I liked), but it didn't do that. I was not impressed by this.

I saw "Licorice Pizza" on Sunday and it was probably the worst movie I've ever seen. The movie critics think it is Oscar worthy...

This critic was spot on...

I haven’t seen the movie and am not defending it. However, I have met you and can’t discount the possibility that you just didn’t understand it.

I'm going with:

Power of the Dog
Nobody
Free Guy
French Dispatch

Yeah, four...I saw most of the movies on OPs list. The whole year was kind of blah.

Hollywood hasn't really produced many good movies the past five years.

I think that is everything…
