RIP Bill Russell

Career high of 37 points.

In a 8-team league. With teams like the Cincinnati Royals.

A 6' 10" black guy (I think he was about 6' 7" but every last detail of this guy's "greatness" is exaggerated) for the Boston Celtics vs. a bunch of 6' 1" white guys named Francis for the Springfield Roosters.

lol "best ever"
I never said best ever, champ. Check yourself. I refuse to chime in on “best ever”
across eras.

I just respect what the man did as player in his era.

Was Red Auerbach doing anything while Bill was doing all of this by himself?

He played the role that he had to play for the Celtics (right from the start of his career) perfectly. But that role was not as significant as the role that Wilt had to play. And he was really never a scorer.
I like players who help their teams win championships. I like what he did to help his teams beat up on all those white guys (whispered….and Wilt the Stilt).

Wait this happened in the same time frame that @HammerDown almost dies??

Hahahahahaha this is odd

Not gonna pretend like I saw him play…

But when I look at stats, I notice a bit of a difference between Wilt and Bill’s shooting percentage. And it makes me think other than dunking, Bill prolly was not much of a threat to score.

Playing within yourself is important and I assume Russell was among the best at that.

You can certainly argue this. I would agree that the Celtics "dominated the era" as a team, for sure.

I posted this in that other thread... if Wilt had played against Bill Russell and the Celtics in every game of his career and had hypothetically scored at that "vs. Russell" rate (rather than what he actually did) he would still lead the NBA in career 50+ point games.
4 such games. Wilt's team was 1-3.

Just imagine how much better he would have been if he'd shot half as often then?

Doesn't not being able to score make him incomplete/inferior to Wilt?

I'm guessing it was 4 in the regular season and 1 in the postseason since the article I was citing was had it as 5 in 143 games (they played 94 regular season games and 49 postseason games against each other).

And if we used 4 times in 94 games as the rate instead of 5 in 143 Wilt's hypothetical number of 50+ games would actually increase, of course.

edit: yep, there's 50 for Wilt in a playoff game against the Celtics. It was a win too, so 2-3 now

Those Celtics teams were the greatest basketball teams ever. No argument here.
See. This is the double standard when it comes to team sports. We can agree that the Celtics of yor were the greatest team ever when they would get run out of the building in today's game, but we can't extend that to players?

Also, I am defense minded. More kudos to the Russell and Rodman type. For that matter, MJ.

I can absolutely extend that to players who truly dominated their peers.

I don't know about nowadays but you know what used to be a bit of a fun challenge? Finding a picture where Russell is defending Wilt one on one.

You are also kinda talking like Wilt was some kind of slouch on defense and not an all-time great at that aspect of the game as well

He used Chamberlain like a diaper so that's gotta count for something.

BTW, Jim Brown is a POS and wouldn't make an NFL roster if he played today. Well, maybe he could get a spot as a special teamer and a slow AF blocking FB.

But he dominated! Yeah he dominated 190lb linebackers and 160lb DB's :L

None that I know of. We're talking about him being a self-proclaimed civil rights leader like Jim Brown, not beating women.
He is a civil rights icon whether you want to admit or not.
