I know what the Alliance was ... I was referring to the fact that the three conferences that blew up expansion have egg on their face and will do anything to look like it was justified.the alliance was more about what networks controlled the CFP. 16 is probably where we end up unless someone is gonna really push for 12
Here is why 16 doesn't work and won't be selected:
- There aren't close to 16 teams worthy in any given year. Hell, 12 is a stretch. Last year that would have added:
13. BYU (10-2)
14. Oregon (10-3)
15. Iowa (10-3)
16. Oklahoma (10-2)
Two three loss teams, no thanks.
- Without the first round byes, you get 1 v. 16, 2 v. 15, etc. Imagine what UGA would have done to Iowa. Michigan beat them like a baby seal in the B1GCG, and UGA beat UM like a baby seal in the semis. No one wants to watch that. What 12 does is give you a first round that is more likely to be very competitive ... 5 v. 12, 6 v. 11, etc.
- You have to play the 1st round after the Conf Champ week for the timing to work. That makes it unfair to let teams that didn't make their CC game have a bye week and then play against teams that were playing the week before.
- The byes, and home team advantage counter the argument that the season won't mean as much. If you are fighting to win your conference, and get a first round bye, or home field advantage, that matters.
- The main one is the number of games played and players' safety. With 16, you are always going to play 4 games, 17 total. Always. With 12, the most you will almost have is teams that play 3 games, 16 total - bye, quarters, semis, finals.
