It hilarious that ratings are down in every sport, yet people only want to talk about the NBA while ignoring that this stuff started in the NFL. Even the Preakness viewership was down...I guess those "woke" horses kneeling really bothered some folks.

Right now, literally every major sport is either 3-4 weeks into their season or in the playoffs. That's never happened before.

The NHL and the NBA have never had games this time of year unless they were exhibition games. In a normal year, the NBA and NHL would still be about 3 weeks away from starting their seasons.

This isn't nearly as much about politics as some want to paint it.

The main thing driving down ratings is that there are too many choices and people are creatures of habit. We watch football in the fall, basketball and hockey in the winter and spring and baseball in the summer. Not surprising that the 2 sports that are being played out of their normal seasons aren't getting the ratings they normally get.

But hey, Jason Whitlock, among others, got some of you to click on his article. So there's that.

It's beyond stupid. Baseball and Hockey are really struggling in the ratings as well. The reason is beyond obvious if you aren't trying to push a political agenda. If you have all the major sports playing at the same time, ratings are going to suffer. The average person will only consume so much sports content. Usually these sports are spread out through the year, this year they aren't.

Just to put it in perspective, more people watched game 4 of the NBA Finals than any single college football game this season (so far)

60%?? Basketball ratings are down sixty fucking percent; that's not just "oooh we have so many choices right now!"

hey, i love basketball, and i'm watching, i'm not one of these boycotting chodes, but there's certainly something to this whole thing, to think otherwise is being purposely obtuse.

you know, i've heard a lot of the NBA fans making the assertion that NBA playoff ratings are down because it has never had to go head to head with football. that may be part of it, but the drop is pretty significant. there may be something else going on.

Exactly. I'm about as bad as it gets for sports addiction and there are times when I just watch something else or listen to music or something because I feel like I'm about to overdose. lol

Yesterday I had a playoff baseball game on, but had the sound off and was listening to music and doing other things. In a normal season, that wouldn't happen during the playoffs.

Just imagine how it feels for the casual sports fan. It's just too much content all at once.

Maybe because it's competing with more than just football? During a normal season, the NBA competes with the NHL playoffs and the dog days of baseball.

This year, it's the NFL, college football, playoff baseball, playoff hockey (which is actually over now). That's not even mentioning things like the French Open, golf, etc.

I'm sure that there are people who aren't watching because of the politics, but that's true for the NFL and other sports as well. But I doubt there are as many of those as some want to portray.

I love b-ball. Hardcore. But I’m not watching mainly because I just can’t watch. And I usually catch the finals

Yep. Most people are die hard fans of a sport or 2 and casual fans of other sports. The NBA season typically starts around Oct. 30. The ratings are always lower from about Oct./November to about Christmas. Then, as the NFL and college seasons start winding down, the casual fans start watching and the ratings go up.

It's part of why, from what I've heard, the NBA is considering using this to change their season to start around Christmas and end about late August/early September.

Let's have an informal poll.

I'm not watching LeDouche.

Poll closed.

Yes ratings are down because LeDouche is a douche.

I think that would be a good move by the NBA. Avoid matching up against the NFL (ratings King) as much as you can.

No, there really isn't much more to it. I'm sure every sport has some fans that aren't watching because of politics, but not nearly as many as some want to claim. Also, people have been locked up in their houses for months and are starting to be able to go out again.

My son is a die hard MMA fan who never misses an event. But now that he can go out again, he's been watching a lot of them on replay, unless it's a card he really cares about. He and his friends can finally go out and do stuff like go to the beach again, so that's what they're doing.

You think that puts something into perspective?

Sure does. If the NBA was tanking because of something they did specifically, we wouldn't see ratings down across the board. Fact is the NBA finals is still a bigger draw than College Football, the MLB Playoffs, the Stanley Cup, the most recent NASCAR event, etc.

So when we talk about the NBA "struggling" it should be understood that it's context of sports ratings struggling across the board.
